Hi!

I just bought a N810 today and updated it to the new OS2008.

However bevor I flashed it and now with the new OS I still have an issue, which is a bit annoying:

The touchscreen is always locked when the keyboard is not slid-out. Whatever I do with the lock/unlock button on top of the device the touchscreen is locked. Only if I slide out the keyboard I'm able to use the touchscreen. Is it normal that I can't use the touchscreen while the keyboard not in use?

What can I do, to change this? I would like to be able to use the touchscreen without sliding out the keyboard.

greeting & all the best

Tim

No... that is definitely not normal behavior.

Normal is something along the lines of:

If it is locked it will unlock if you slide it open. If you slide it back without touching the screen it re-locks. If you slide it back after touching the screen it stays locked.

Unfortunately I can't help you beyond this... If the problem persisted through an OS flash, I'd say you have a defective unit. Try and return it for another one.

What keeps me from thinking that it's technical defect, is the fact that everything works as I should, as soon as the keyboard is slid out. When it is closed, only the button work properly.

Edit: I found out that my touchscreen starts to respond, If I apply a light pressure on the backside while holding it in my hand. Could there be some kind of loose contact?

hmmm that's definitely a loose something if the buttons work but not the screen.

If the tablet is in "locked" mode, the jogger on the left hand side and the buttons on the top shouldn't respond, but should make the little "move [][0] to unlock" notification appear in the upper-right-hand-corner

(my apologies for the atrocious textual representation of the unlock slider :P )

In closed and locked mode, there appears a small window saying that the screen and the buttons are locked. That's how it should be. However if i touch the screen this small windows does not appear. Only If I press the device a litte, than the screen suddenly comes back to life and seems to work properly.

Right now it seems that there is some kind of loose contact somewhere behind the screen.

So, when you close the device and then slide the slider to "un-lock" the device the keys begin to respond but not the touchscreen?

If that's so, maybe there's something that gets pinched when you slide the N810 shut?

Exactly

But the screen does respond if I press slightly on the backside, while holding the device in my hand. When I press the cover of the battery case somewhere in the middle between the writing "Nokia Nseries" and the slider which opens the cover, I can hear a quiet "click" and than the touchscreen responds to the pen.

There is definitely something wrong with this device.

Hmm... yeah, I'd say return it and get a new one. Sorry to hear you got a lemon :/

I'm really happy with my N810 They're great devices but I've heard a lot that Nokia's QC isn't the greatest on outgoing items. But they're more than happy to exchange for a new one if it's under warranty.
