Think I'll have to waste more money and buy a different phone...

As far as I can tell, all the SE phones have DUN and some ALSO have PAN.
But I have never heard of a phone that has only PAN.

Try to change the CID number in your connection string from 1 to, say, 3.
The connection string is:

*99***<CID#>#

where the CID number identifies the CID-th configuration entry in your phone.
Just have a look at yours (view) and it should say the CID number.
Some operators do lock they own CID configurations.

(Note: I don't remember, but the default connection number should be *99***1#, change it to: *99***3#).

No need... I finally made it!

After all that it was something simple. When I used the phone Wizard it set up my connection with "Internet" as the APN. I just changed that to pp.vodafone.co.uk (after a chance remark by a Vodafone customer service chap) and it now works!

Oh the joy...

How the bloomin eck would the average person know such things...

Thanks all for trying to help
