But when I start the update tool, it won't let me use the file to update! It wants to get it again from the web.

did you manage to get the headset into pairing mode?
this review seems to indicate that it got a troublesome to activate pairing mode:

When you reach the step where the installation wizard displays the firmware version it intends to download and install, have you tried clicking the "Change" button? That should allow you to browse local files and select the firmware you've downloaded already. If that's not working, what is the exact error message you're seeing?
