Tap "Select from installed Applications", and when it pops up the window, double tap the app you want, and it adds it to the list. Usually you do not want to run as root or from the terminal.

I have setup my 9 favorite applications. In "Settings" I use "64" for icon size, "padding" of "14", and I clicked "use auto layout". I have 1 horizontal row of 9 icons which I dragged with the stylus to the bottom of my desktop. Like BrentDC says, "do not run as root or as terminal.
