Sounds sweet, I guess I'll just say screw the iphone and go with one of these setups. The real reason I personally wanted AT&T was to eventually screw around with some of the unlocked phones out there, specifically the Free Runner, but I'm too cheap right now to pay $400 for a phone that is not yet stable. On the up side, the unlocked phones should be compatible with the media net plan so in a few months or a year or whenever if I do decide to go that route, I can just buy the phone no problem. If I go with the iPhone, I'd be locked into the iPhone service for 2 years.

One last question, what specific AT&T phones will work with this. It is my understanding that the phone needs to have DUN or PAN bluetooth profiles. The phones I am looking at right now are the LG Vu, Moto V3xx, Moto V9, and the Moto Z9.

Any suggestions?

(Thanks for all the help)

The last question is going to take some research on your part As I mentioned before, the wiki has some info:
http://maemo.org/community/wiki/BluetoothDUN/

If it's not listed there, you'll have to look at individual phones to see what profiles they support, etc. Be sure the phone actually supports 3G. All I can tell you is the Blackjack works fine.

palm centro and treos work like a charm, if you get a standard plan with data you can get an app called usb modem for $30 that will let you pipe the standard phone data via bluetooth DUN, not to mention the centro is $69 - $129 on at&t with and without contract respectively

Hah, in the world of technology a year is a life time, and I love new gadgets... especially ones I can hack.

I use a Treo 700p and bluetooth pairing with my N800. I thought I would need USBModem but the bluetooth pairing works for me so no need to spend $$$ on USBModem.

when you use BT pairing, are you still able to use yer treo for internet or phone ?
this could be handy..

when i use wmwifirouter, the phone is not usable except as "router" only..
But, many devices at once can connect w/o any "pairing".. phone shows up on devices network then they connect..

But be aware... if your data use is too big and AT&T realize that you are thetering they will charge you by kilobyte despite your unlimited plan.
how in the dam did you pair them up?
i have htc kaiser. both devices see each other. im in n800 > bluetooth > devices (shows phone correctly) > "select a device" > it sets a passkey..
I cannot disable that And it must be at least 1 number .. > authentication failed OR pairing failed every time..

I have a n810 and was out with the wife this weekend and on the spot we deceided to see a movie. There were tons of wi fi networks in range but I couldn't connect to them with the n810. This weekeend really hammered home what I think is a major flaw in the n810 is that it is tied only to wi fi. I had planned on getting a cradlepoint router and sticking in a USB modem to create my own wi fi but that obviously isn't portable because I would either be stuck in my car or office only.

So I am looking at "phone as a modem" option. Everything that I have read about this is that most people say it is slow (aka dial up speed) and hard to connect via bluetooth.

So my question is what type of speeds do you get using 3g with the phone as a
modem?

I want to track to see how much bandwith I use on a daily basis is there software that I can download to track this for me?

Thanks
Eric
