I just moved to the Netherlands from the United States, and am tired of carrying around my Dutch/English dictionary. I'd love to have one on my N800 if it is possible. Anyone know of a good app, that can work offline?

Thanks.

Hi, welcome in The Netherlands!

First of all there is an application called gnuvd (GNU Van Dale) it is a frontend to the online website of the famous Vandale dictionary. You will have to find or compile your own port though.

Install the dict application. To find out all the dutch dictionaries go to Application Manager, search for dutch (or 'nl') and install them. There are also frontends for these command line utilities, but I have no idea which one is good or anything like that.

For MicroB, your browser, there are several 3rd party dictionary packages: http://browser-extras.garage.maemo.o...ds_os2008.html

It is also possible to get a Wikipedia offline copy, which dict is able to read. Might be useful.

You could try stardict. It's available from the "maemo extras" repository (for chinook, which works fine for me with diablo). There are plenty of dictionaries available from the main stardict website. You should be able to find Dutch <-> English dictionaries.

One quick question: I got stardict working and it works very well, but the pronunciations have square placeholders with four numbers in them, which I assume are placeholders for unicode characters. How can I get the characters to display properly?

That sounds like a font problem. I have no idea what font you would need for NL text.

Dutch uses the Roman alphabet - it doesn't seem to be the Dutch words that are the problem, but rather the pronunciation. Perhaps it uses IPA? I'm not sure, since I can't see the characters.

Ah! Now I understand the problem. You need to download and install an IPA font, and configure stardict to use it.

Two fonts you can download are Charis SIL and Doulos SIL. Get the Debian package versions. You can install them with the Application Manager in Red Pill mode, or use wget to fetch and install them via xterm.

Here's how to do it from an Xterm:
Code:
sudo gainroot # or whatever method you use to become root
wget http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/render_download.php?site_id=nrsi&format=file&media_id=CharisSIL4.104.deb&filename=ttf-sil-charis_4.104-1_all.deb
wget http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/render_download.php?site_id=nrsi&format=file&media_id=DoulosSIL4.104.deb&filename=ttf-sil-doulos_4.104-1_all.deb
dpkg -i ttf-sil-charis_4.104-1_all.deb ttf-sil-doulos_4.104-1_all.deb
You can safely ignore the "This script does nothing" message.

You should now have two new fonts to choose from. In stardict, select the "Preferences" menu and then select "Font" (third item from the top). Click the "Use custom font" checkbox, and click the "Dictionary font: Choose" button to select a new font. The two new font faces are "Charis SIL" and "Doulos SIL". I prefer the latter. Set the font size to 12pt, and then click the "OK" button. Now you should be able to read the IPA pronunciation characters.
