For whatever reason, my N800's screen stays on while charging (its dimmed) even though it is not set to do so. Because of this, When I leave it sit there charging for a long time, I have reason to believe that after the charge is complete, I am draining the battery slightly because the screen doesn't shut off. (I have flashed the device several times and it always does this, I don't really expect to be able to fix this). I am wondering if someone more knowledgeable than me could point me in the right direction towards getting my N800 to shutdown automatically after the charging is complete. I looked through a few scripts in /etc/init.d/ and /etc/* but I thought it would be a good idea to ask here before spending too much more time searching. Thanks for any help!

You don't need to turn it off. Just do 'lock screen and keys' and set the timeouts of the wifi and screen to 10 min max or so. Because when the screen and wifi are off it will stay charged for days.
Strange as it may seem, turning it on and off drains the battery faster than using 'lock screen and keys'.

Also close any programs/services that are known to be power hungry, and/or might try to re-open the network connection. I know Microb especialy with Flash animations running, uses quite some cpu power . Also turn off the SSH server service when installed. OMWeather connects to the internet for updates by default.

there should be a option for this under display in control panel...

but i have recently noticed that some of the led settings are not properly sett in diablo on my N800 (specifically the two that deal with the device charging and finished charging, they should be toggled by the "other notifications" in the led tab of the display settings dialog), so it could be that there is some issue with the "display stays lit" option as well...

still, works for me.

ya, it did the same thing in 2007HE, and 2007, so I don't know what's up (maybe because I've dropped it a few times?).

iamthewalrus: yes, I am aware that charging while the device is on (and in offline mode) is my best option, since the screen shuts off while it is on and charging, it just isn't as convenient to get home at night and then have to turn it on, wait for it to boot, then put it in offline mode and start charging as it is to just plug it in.
