I tried removing the "@gmail.com" from the username with no difference. Thanks though.

Yes, I change the settings on the PC prior to editing the settings in modest.

Could I just ask if anyone is sucessfully using pop Gmail on Modest?
Surely there would be more outcry if it wasn't working .

Yes, POP3 GoogleMail works fine for me on my N800 (latest version client, downloaded a few days ago). I didn’t think too much about how to configure it. I simply used the Account wizard to create the POP account (Region = UK, Service Provider = Gmail(POP)) under Email/Tools/Accounts/New. As sgosnell suggested, the username does not include the ‘@gmail.com’. Besides this, my settings look practically identical to yours.

The message “Unable to connect to pop.googlemail.com. Server name or port number may be incorrect.” has appeared a couple of times recently but, I guess, this is a server problem as all is OK 10 minutes later.

Using pop Gmail on Modest isn't working for me either on N810 diablo, latest update installed. I Have exactly the same problem as Fionn: no error message or whatsoever. Even if I change the POP3 port number to an incorrect one, no error message shows up!
The Gmail account is working on my Windows PC without problems though...

By the way, other POP3 accounts I tried do work properly. So as a workaround, I let my gmail being forwarded to a "normal" pop3 account to be able to read my email on my N810.

FYI:
My gmail is working after all. Probably because I have added "recent:" to my POP3 account its user name. I also read my gmail from my desk-top PC. As a result, all messages were marked as downloaded already before reading them on my Nokia N810. By using "recent:username@gmail.com" on the gmail account on the N810 you can prevent this.

See also this explanation from Google.

Slight update to this:

When I initially set up my pop gmail account in modest my first action would be to send a test email to myself from the n800.
The test email never budged from the outbox despite many attempts .

Yesterday I opened Modest again and tried sending/receiving (not expecting anything to have changed) and, voila, it both sent my test email and received emails . It first prompted me if I wished to ignore security certificates which I did. I'd never been prompted for that before.

I still have an issue though - I can't open email folders .
Thus I can receive email and see that my inbox contains email but I can't see who it's from or what the subject is and I can't double-click on the folder to open it.

In other words I can't get past this:

The same goes for sent folders, outbox etc.

However, when I get an email notification I can click on that and open the full email. Very strange.

Any ideas? Perhaps I should just bite the bullet and do a full reflash. Does a full reflash mean I'd have to apply all the SSU updates post re-flash?
