The gainroot script shipped with the device includes a CAL check to see if R&D mode is enabled, and will prevent itself from executing if it isn't. rootsh does a variety of things (including some nice environment setup if you call it using "rootsh"), but at its core, it basically just removes those checks from the gainroot script so you can use it without enabling R&D mode (which has other potentially negative effects).

sudser does not touch the gainroot script, as and gainroot is the method most scripts and tutorials rely on for gaining root access, it doesn't solve that issue for most people. What sudser does do is setup the sudoers file so you can use sudo to run things as root from a user shell (which is the method most people are used to).

In summary, they accomplish two different things, and serve two different purposes but complement each other nicely.

Cheers for the clarification on those two scripts. I was sure I'd removed the gainroot package from the previous build when I added the sudoer package. It left me a big confused when I added only the sudoer package with the fresh rebuild and bounced off the "not in RD mode" message. My suspicion after adding both packages back in this time was that they where doing two different things. I'm pretty sure I'd RD mode'd my 810 with the previous build too though. I must admit though that your first response motivated me to find out exactly what the two packages where doing and how; "what? I don't know what they are doing? Crap.. now I gotta know everything about them." (there's a title given to this kind of mind set )

Now it just leads to more questions though; what am I not able to do with this device not in RD mode? I know that's documented already though so I'll go dig through the wiki first before I pose that as a serious question here. The hardware is fantastic and I don't think half of what it is capable of has been explored yet.

I also can't shake the feeling that the plastic box in the 810 covers a removable SD slot rather than a chip mounted directly to the board. If I get brave, I may explore that further and see if I can replace that.

Cheers again and hopefully I wasn't to out of place in my response; been a frustrating few weeks with my symbiot down and then most of the functions I use it for seeming to not work with the new kernel. Today it seems aircrack is working with the wireless radio again which is rather important for a security and network tech like myself. I've even had someone buy an 810 after coming to ask me about it and they're pleased as punch just using it as a portable calendar thorugh GPE/Google. (personal information on Google's servers is another issue all together.)

Not much. It's basically just for gainroot and changes a some of the power up/down logic to be more forgiving for, you guessed it, R&D factory work! It's not anything anybody needs to enable on their tablet.

Thanks again. I absorb this kind of info like a spunge.

Now off to other threads as this one was about escalation packages. My next issues to figure out are why aircrack no longer works since the kernel update (sometimes get a flicker of the air traffic then no further reception while the notebook beside it continues to see traffic.. grrr..). That's another issue and different thread though along with being a more specialized topic and usually the type of question we slap people around for asking over on tech republic. (well, people asking how to pop passwords tends to get humorous but unhelpful answers anyhow )
