what i would like to see instead is the adaptive web. show up with a mobile browser, get a page streamlined for that, desktop same and so on.

but for that we need to toss the current way for the browser to id itself to the server, and rather have something where the browser can specifically tell the server what features it can or cant support.
Well, it's a long way from specific feature info, but CSS knows about different targets; at least print, desktop, and mobile. (For static pages, that mostly covers it, if it were used; it doesn't do much for scripted pages, but it's not clear how to implement inherent graceful degradation of them, and web designers won't manually implement it anymore than what they could do now.)

you mean like the "accepts" header all browsers support? the feature exists, it just needs to be used. But more importantly, it needs to be gracefully backwards compatible, amongst countless different browsers

I heard that they might actually implement my Poptart idea!

ah, i get the impression thats silently ignored in "favor" of this string:

"Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008071812 Firefox/3.0.1"

hell, facebook wont allow the microb browser to access as it cant tell if its firefox, IE, safari or opera (and maybe lately chrome).

yes, because accepts has never provided much "real world" useful information, everyone builds their own information based on the user-agent.

I've not had these issues... FB works just fine in MicroB on my N810.

Benson, I completely agree with you. Ajax is awesome, but it's like salt. Too much of it will make your steak unbearably... salty!

Like Digg for example. Used to be a great site, but slowly adding ajax to EVERYTHING, now it's incredibly slow on most computers (loading of comments will often just "crash").

There is also a useragentswitcher extension available on browser-extras. Useful when such problems occurs.
