I hope nokia adds voice also.
I know it is hard to use such a bulky device as a phone..... but they could use one of those smart small headsets from the morph concept which is very small and fits in its slot in the ddevice just like the stylus.

That way we can use the headset when needed or put it back in its slot when not needed.

Hm. General Antilles said "$50 [per month] at least" (in the IRC log)

Nope, $20/mo. if they remain unlocked non-carrier devices. You can get a pre-paid SIM for AT&T Go Phones (sold cheap on eBay), and get the $20/30days unlimited data add on. You just have to remember to re-load the SIM every month, and activate the unlimited data option every month.

At least, as of a few months ago, people were still doing that (putting it into unlocked Option GT 3G ExpressCards). No telling how long before AT&T closes that loop hole. But, you can also get unlimited "data only" plans for your phone (basically to use it just as an internet browsing device), through AT&T, that are as little as $35/mo.

The NIT already comes with the headset I'd use (I hate BT headsets).

But, yes, I agree, add voice and messaging to the device. You can already make VOIP calls on the NIT, why not also allow cellular calls? And definitely SMS/MMS messaging.

I'm also disappointed that it'll just be tri-band UMTS and not quad-band. :-/

Didn't know about that deal; real good one, especially involving no contract. If T-mobile had offered the $40 data-only plan with FlexPay, I'd have gone for it.

We'll see how things pan out; I might go data only at some point, if there are no voice-capable N9xxs, or I might stay phone-and-tablet. A prepaid SIM is actually a real benefit for a data-only option, as I can always dig out a phone and use it, in a pinch.

That thing?! It slaughters my ears; maybe I have small ears.

I hadn't seen that it would be tri-band; where'd that come from? (I read the slides, I think...)

forgive my total and complete ignorance....i am on verizon (which is cdma and evdo ) and already pay through the nose for data voice etc.... why care if it comes with voice- can't you use skype/gizmo/grandcentral or some other variant to make a "phone" experience..or is that prohibited on t-mo/att in the states?

Because you could wind up way out in the boonies with only GPRS (or even only GSM) connectivity, and need to make a call to a landline. As long as you've got GPRS, you can IM, but voice isn't likely to work at all. (Though a half-duplex voice channel is theoretically doable.)

Of course, people survived before there were mobile phones, so it's not a necessity.

1) Most of the carriers have terms of service agreements against that kinda thing, yeah. But that's just a matter of "if they catch you".

2) quality of VOIP calls is frequently not as good as quality of circuit switched calls. Even with ideal signal strength (even on a wired network).

3) for skype at least, SMS to non-skype users is one way out to them, no ability for them to reply. That makes skype significantly less useful to people who SMS a lot (like I do). And it doesn't help that skype uses a proprietary mechanism for txt messaging. They should at least have an option for: a) using a jabber client for the user's interface, and b) 2 way support for SMS and MMS.

4) you'd have to stay logged in to skype to get things like voice mail and missed call notifications. Which is sort of 50/50 in a way -- being able to turn off skype/etc. so that you're not getting calls, and the calls go straight to that service's voice mail, but still use the data capabilities on the device is better, IMO, than silent/vibrate mode in _some_ situations (maybe even most, but not all).

5) right now, the tablets don't have silent/vibrate mode. And even if they did, the VOIP clients would have to add support for triggering your vibrate mechanism.

Well, apps currently have the ability to throb the task-switch button; that could be linked to vibration.

All my apologies for digging out of its grave an old thread, but I just wanted to point out that Erminig is still supported, and it is under active developement!
