Steps in order
1. Turn off 770.
2. Romove MMC card.
3. Start flasher.
4. Plug 770 into usb cable.
5. Press and hold power button on 770 to start it.
May need to hold home button while booting in step 5. Your milage may very.

MMC mobile memory cards.
I removed the mmc card and powered up my Nokia 770
( 2006 version ) as suggested - but the flasher program remains waiting for a "suitable USB device".
I would be gratefull for any advice/ information to solve this problem.
[ flasher-2.0.macosx and zImage-su-18-200627 are stored in folder
2GB_mmc ]
My Mac OSX Terminal session:
alhmacpb:~ alexanderhardie$ ls
alhmacpb:~ alexanderhardie$ cd 2GB_mmc
alhmacpb:~/2GB_mmc alexanderhardie$ ls
alhmacpb:~/2GB_mmc alexanderhardie$ chmod a+x ./flasher-2.0.macosx
alhmacpb:~/2GB_mmc alexanderhardie$ sudo ./flasher-2.0.macosx -f -k ./zImage-su-18-200627
