Thanks again for your help on this. Also, when I try to run the apt-get command, it still indicates that libglade is missing.
repository.maemo.org is currently functional. No idea what to tell you other than to try 'apt-get update' on the command line as root, which gives a much more detailed error message in general.

LibSM is part of minimo and can be found in the minimo repository, details at:

Perhaps I'm making some progress. Was able to get application catalog with maemo repository finally to refresh (I'd previously designated "user" rather than "free non-free"), but couldn't then figure out how to install it once it was apparently accepted in the catalog list. Also, did load and install minimo, but that didn't get me any further toward getting abiword to work. Error message still says it's missing libglade.

Application Manager doesn't show (most) libraries. You will need to manually 'apt-get install libglade' as root in xterm.

Honestly, given the extremly alpha quality of this build of abiword, you might want to wait.

I reluctantly must agree with you. "apt-get install libglade" as root in xterm still comes up with the message "Couldn't find package libglade" after "reading package lists" and "building dependency tree." I'll be watching this forum for further progress being made in enabling the installation of abiword on the 770 to become more manageable (as least for me). Many thanks again for your time and ongoing efforts

When (the above version of) Abiword is running the keyboard won't pop up for me, rendering the program not-yet-useful. Is this everyone's experience or just mine?

You are right, the normal keyboard won't popup but you can activate the fullscreen keyboard with the whipkey if you have activated it in the nokia config.

Is it normal that only images are viewable in word documents with this test release?
Or something went wrong during installation?
Maybe the open/save dialog just missing the filetype selection like in the old Gnumeric version?

i think it's just a font missing... Maybe you can change the font of all the document.
