Hello again skatebiker:

Well, it looks like your difficulties are with 'pyculator' requiring 'python-hildondesktop', and not really 'mephemeris', right? So you may want to start another thread for that.

My advise is to try to install 'python-hildondesktop' first. Personally, when I was first trying out Python desktop applets, I found out where about that stuff in this thread:

http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...3&postcount=17

...but I now think that you can 'apt-get' install the two required packages instead.

P.S. You never indicated whether you had tried the other 'python2.5-gpsbt' ideas that I had suggested earlier?

I tried it but with no result. Before that I uninstalled pyculator (which didn't work good).

Possible mephemeris does not have the proper dependencies list ??
I didn't have such problems while installing other applications.
Did others install mEphemeris successfully ?

Yech! From the messages, it looks like you have a *partially installed* python-hildondesktop package. No, this problem has nothing to do with Mephemeris (I did not write 'python-hildondesktop'!). It is probably easy to fix, but I am a Fedora (RPM) guy, and know very little about Debian (apt-get) stuff like this -- just enough for me to install stuff on my N800.

My advise, as in the past, is for you to (perhaps) start a new thread to ask for help in resolving your package/repository issues.

One of my other questions to you was this: did you get rid of your duplicate/redundant respositories?

your problem was broken pyculator package, not python-hildondesktop. Since you have uninstalled broken package you can now install python2.5-gpsbt package.

Root cause is for this is that you have mixed outdated repositories with current ones. python-hildondesktop is nowadays called python2.5-hildondesktop. I would recommend you to use only diablo repositories, but not extras-devel one

I tried but it issued the same problem, cannot install gpsbt.

What do you mean with 'only diablo repositries' ? How can I do this ?
Should I change something in the application manager ?

I would still say that these questions/answers regarding proper repository setup should be in a *different* thread, since people are reading this one for info about Mephemeris...

Anyways, back in msg #73, you showed a screen shot of some of your repositories in Application Manager. Then, in msg #75 you did what I suggested and showed the complete list in text format. I suggested that you do the following in msg #76 (and now mikkov is saying the same thing):

1) Disable one of your 'maemo extras' repositories (you have both a 'chinook' and 'diablo' one.

2) Disable your 'maemo extras devel' repository.

3) Do something to remove the 'duplicate' repository entries that you have for 'maemo extras' (you listed *2* chinook and *2* diablo -- you only want *1* of them, not *4*). Look at your own messages to confirm what we are saying.

Please start a new thread if you have more issues/concerns about this!

Finally I managed to install mephemeris and I tested the application. It is a nice application, but clearly unfinished, looking like a beta application.

What I like:

- clear self-explanatory buttons what to do or refresh
- sky chart with different display options

What I dislike:

- no configuration / settings screen. The user has to edit /usr/lib/mephemeris/mephemeris.ini by hand.
- when opening 'sky' it opens a sky map with lots of option buttons but when the user clicks a button nothing happens. There is nothing such as a 'refresh' or 'apply' button.
- when the location is updated (in this form the text fields are too small to fit the letters/digits whic render unreadable text)
and the application is restarted it resets to the value in the ini file
- it includes 'Pluto' in the planets. Why include such a faint dwarf planet ?

Conclusion:

Nice application but it has to be finished yet.

Some of us grew up with Pluto being a planet, and we still like it that way. In any case it deserves its place, if for no other reason than that it's actually possible for a backyard amateur astronomer to spot Pluto. Finally, the "official" status of Pluto is _still_ being discussed, and there's no reason for us ordinary folks to rrip it out of the familiar set-of-planets setting.

Sorry for the delayed response, skatebiker, to your review of Mephemeris. I thank you for doing so, even though I am not sure I agree with some of your evaluation

1) True, any 'load up' settings need to be controlled by editting the 'ini' file. If you can suggest some of them that would greatly benefit from 'remembering' from one session to another, please suggest it. I figured that most/all were fairly 'static' and did not need this feature i.e. set it up once, and leave it alone after that.

2) In this thread, and also in the README, it mentions how the sky plot screen can be 'refreshed' without having an explicit 'button' marked to do so. One of the ways is simply to 'touch' the plot itself. Did you see that in the README file?

3) I agree that the 'text' in the 'location' setter looks bad -- but (believe me) I tried a zillion combinations in PyGTK and this was the best that I could do. I suspect a bug in the libraries.

4) TA-t3 speaks for me re: Pluto, and I made a similar comment about this in your same comment for the 'MOrrery' program

As far as being 'beta' software, well, I had always thought that this meant that the software was still 'buggy' and not ready for practical use. Here is what Wikipedia says:

"unstable and not yet ready for release"

I suppose this is rather subjective, but I tried to make sure that I did not declare Mephemeris to be version '1.0' until I had taken all the known 'bugs' out, and introduced sufficient 'functionality' that it would be 'usable'. So, IMHO, Mephemeris is no longer 'beta' software
