how many rss feeds can be used before the n810 becomes sluggish/inefficient and use up the battery alot, is 3 or 4 too many?

The RSS feed applet with scrolling uses significant battery power indeed.

I'm subscribed to about ~20 feeds via the RSS Reader, w/ autoscrolling turned off on the applet, and seem to be fine...

I understand your concern. There is a hack posted on the forums here. It makes the RSS reader applet available for stylus. This way, each item takes up less room at the expense of not being finger-friendly anymore. So then you must use your stylus.

It is even MORE eyecandy if the RSS feed is video. I am sure you know it takes video RSS feeds, right?
