Hey everyone, I'm brand new to the 770 - just got my first one yesterday. So far it rocks. I have a couple of questions:

1) What memory card upgrade (if any) should I purchase and why?
2) I've been reading alot about partititions and file formats etc, but would appreciate a simple explanation as to what this is all about.
3) What are the 'must have' applications out there?

If any of you longtime users can help me out, I'd be very grateful.

Regards,

CW

1 - 1Gb, see next #
2 - if you are a noob, with 1Gb card you won't have any kind of problems, everything should work fine just out of the box.
3 - MaemoMapper, Xournal, FBReader... for everything you need, have a look at planet.maemo.org. On the PIM side, I am currently trying winzig and at the moment I think it's the best one I tried 'til now, but you have to install python.

my 2¢

1, 2- I thought that the latest update fixed the 2gb problem. With that in mind, you should probably make sure you have the latest version of the OS, which can be downloaded by running the update program that Nokia supplied with the 770, also available from nokia.com. (be sure to go to nokiausa.com if you are in the states). Also - if someone confirms that the 2GB issue has been fixed then get a 2GB card.

3- The must have programs... it depends what you want to do. As far as just using it to browse and newsread - the installed apps are fine. From there you should go to:
http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog2006
and try stuff out.

Have fun!

Thanks. I have downloaded the latest version of the OS and have purchased a 2 gig rs-mmc. Any idea what the optimum size for a swap file is? Or does the 770 take care of that automatically.

Set it to max... (which is, I believe, 64MB)

That all depends on what you want to use the 770 for, innit?

Some programs require Root Access and a terminal, so installing xterm is a good place to start.

For surfing itself, there's not much you can add. The only alternative browser is Minimo, and there are some issues with that.

If you're going to watch any video then Mplayer is an absolute must.

Evince and FBreader will certainly be useful at some point; you need as many different ways to deal with documents (like pdfs) as possible.

Everything else, hell, I haven't even found actual uses or urgent needs for. I'm not a power user, just a casual one.
