There's something being passed around in this Maemo Community Council that seriously affects social skills.
Nokia don't have a responsibility to aim for popularity. They have a responsibility to aim for profit. Profit can also be achieved by dominating niche markets, not only by catering the masses and aiming for popularity. (Actually, at least in my business, it's much easier to be profitable in niche markets than it is in the mass market.)

Nokia aren't a low-volume, niche market provider, though. (Most) Maemo developers want as many users as possible, to get more recognition. (Most) Maemo users want more devices to sell to get more developers.

Hard keys also allow you act without looking. Both in that they allow you to find exactly where to push and that they respond in a tactile, not visual, manner.

Frank, I can also post pictures of cats and add a "???" at the end. It's probably as helpful for discussion.

Anyway. Popularity is one practical measure of success, it's not a goal, but it's a byproduct of doing your work well. Yes, you can also have different goals. A niche approach works for some products, although I do argue that it's not a good strategy for a SW platform.
