Guys:

I'm getting close to finally getting a N810. This MID seems to be a REAL computer and I will treat it as such.
Just some things I want to ask to get this set up correctly. After I do what you suggest and start playing with it more, I'll stop asking stupid questions. From what I can tell, downloading and installing open-source apps is a bit more complex than just running a setup.exe file.
Mini Tutorial on these please:
* Downloading and installing Maemo Mapper & aMSN. First run.
* Download free Wayfinder maps (I already looked at the wayfinder website).
* Get Diablo installed (if not already), update Diablo, Flash, etc.
* Any other things I should do when I first get the N810 so it's properly administered.

That's all!
Thanks !

I'm reasonably tech savy, but still a newbe with the N810.

There are open source applications for Windows that install easily via setup.exe files, so you're a bit off there, but I get your meaning. Certainly, there are some applications for Maemo that take a bit of work and command line magic to install.

Keep in mind though that the hard-to-install applications are over represented in the troubleshooting discussions here. Regardless of their license and regardless of their platform, applications with complicated, finicky installation processes lead to troubled, frustrated users who need help.

There's an ongoing--and quite successful--effort underway to encourage developers to upload all their Maemo applications to a single location: the maemo.org Extras repository. For the large and growing list of applications there already, installation is as simple as opening Application Manager on a tablet, browsing for an interesting app, and tapping "Ok".

* Downloading and installing Maemo Mapper & aMSN.
Maemo Mapper is in Extras, so it's an easy install from the Application Manager.

As for aMSN, it looks a bit more complicated, but hopefully the instructions in the aMSN forums will be enough to guide you through the process.

* Download free Wayfinder maps (I already looked at the wayfinder website).
  1. Launch the Map application on your tablet.
  2. Open the Map application's menu.
  3. Tap "Maps" in that menu.
  4. Tap the "Available maps" tab.
  5. Select a map.
  6. Tap the "Download" button.

* Get Diablo installed (if not already)...
  1. Open a web browser window on your Windows computer. (I'm guessing that's what you use as you mention "setup.exe" installers.)
  2. Go to http://www.nokiausa.com/A4686323#.
  3. Download the Nokia Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard.
  4. Run the easy installer for the Nokia Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard.
  5. Run the Nokia Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard and follow its instructions.

...update Diablo...
Your tablet will automatically check for any updates beyond what you install via the Nokia Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard above. If and when it finds an update, your tablet will flash an icon in the status area of its screen. Tapping that icon will lead you through the process of installing the update.

...Flash...
Any updates to Flash will come to your tablet via the update process above. Adobe does not make updates to Flash on Maemo available on its web site as it does for other platforms.

Thanks for the quick response and very helpful reply! Even the links work .
Some steps actually seem more simple than I thought and some like installing aMSN might take some extra work for me.
I think I have enough info now to get started.
