I apologize for the noob nature of this question (I've been reading other posts on these topics trying to make sense of it all).

SIP

When I add a phone number field to one of my contacts on click on it I get an error that reads, "unable to call. No SIP acct available" Where/how do I get a SIP account for the n810. I read a lot about something called Asterisk, but I can't seem to find it. I am new to SIP, so if you could answer me as you would a 4th grader, I would appreciate it.

PhoneLink

I've installed this program but it makes no sense to me. I have a Verizon LG Dare phone (VX9700). It is paired via Bluetooth to the n810. When I try to do anything in PhoneLink the program freezes my n810. Again, how would you explain to a 4th grader how to set this up.

Thanks for your help/advice.

I'm on a similar quest to set up VOIP on my N810. I'm still doing the background research and haven't tried to get it working yet.

If you want to use the standard SIP phone software that comes installed on the table, my impression is that you need to sign up with a VOIP provider like voipbuster.com. Note that you will NOT need to download their software onto your N810, you can use the SIP client already on your tablet. If you want to receive a VOIP call on your PC, you will need VOIP software. And my impression is that x-lite from counterpath.com is a reasonable choice.

The other thing you could consider is using Skype instead of SIP, since they have software for the N810 that you could download and use.

I have been perusing the SIP client on the n810. I see why you advised me to use Skype. I think I will try that route - but am still curious about the no-frills SIP client.

I registered a user/pass at Voipbusters, inputed the information on my tablet, but could not successfully call any number. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

I use sipbuster with the built in "internetcall" client.

Configuration was pretty easy - mostly as per the sipbuster web page.

It interoperates with xlite well for pcs and macs (even with video).

Have it running all the time with gtalk and skype.

Can you be more specific on "sipbuster"? There is no sipbuster.com/.org/.net ...

The best combo I have found is GrandCentral.com through Gizmo client. If sipbuster works better, that would be great.

ah - me culpa - a slip of the fingers...

i use voipbuster.com for sip.

Tried to get into grandcentral - but they had closed the beta.

Based on my reads of this board that is the indeed the best combo.
For those of us without grandcentral - this works well.

voipbuster doesnt give me free inbound number # like I got out of gizmo (the free 775 #s thery were giving away a while back) - but I can call out to any us # for free... great while out on the road
