Am I particularly susceptible to the PSP buzz, or is this stuff really so exciting? The Nintendo DS does nothing for me. And I don't play games, either!

>>>Chad Allen just dropped us an email about a new graphic novel developed specifically for the PSP. It is called NYC2123: Dayender, and is available for free download at nyc2123.com. If you don't want to download the novel to PSP, you can still view it either on your PC, or PSP web browser, as the site is formatted nicely for PlayStation Portable. The story is cyberpunk themed, and does contain some strong language. The first volume of the six-chapter series is available on their site now, with more to come.

play station portable as online reading device
http://www.futureofthebook.org/blog/...tation_po.html
>>The new updated Sony PSP portable gaming device will include a web browser. That gives it games, film, photo and web -- the most comprehensive pocket instrument out there. But for the time being, it's read-only. Without a stylus, or virtual keyboard, many of the web's more interactive elements will be unavailable.

Yeah, no kidding. People are hungry for this size browser. And that screen ain't nothin'! Certainly is a big picture. I wonder if it's lifesize?

Actually, come to look closer at it, the page being displayed must be 1000 pixels wide. Is this a hoax, Ben?

Edited later
I should say "composite" rather than hoax. In fact the webpage looks more like it's 1280 or 1600 pixels wide, not the Sony's 480.

I thought the 2.0 software was already out. Wouldn't a regular photo be possible then? Or perhaps the lure of the browser is tantalizing but not enough to risk upgrading, and that accounts for this article and photo . . .

Updated Friday --
Ben Vershbow owned up to having combined a webpage screen capture with the photo of the PSP so this isn't a demonstration of the screen resolution or browsing experience.

Still, I wonder -- with so many people talking about "don't upgrade to 2.0" and "what great features you get in the upgrade" -- isn't the upgrade available yet? When is that already?

Atari 2600 emulator for PSP
http://www.boingboing.net/2005/08/26...emulator_.html
>>There's now an Atari 2600 emulator for your PSP -- just don't upgrade the thing to Firmware 2.0 or you lose the ability to load your own apps onto it.

Oh, wait -- you mean Sony doesn't want to make it easy for users to do neat things with the PSP? Gee, web browsing or control over your destiny. Which will it be?

Since Mike checked out, I'm finding more than I wanted to ever know about the PSP. But since I ran across this, I thought I'd post it.

Adding an External Wi-Fi Antenna to Your PSP
http://www.informit.com/articles/pri...?p=383849&rl=1
>>Not content with the factory-installed Wi-Fi adapter in his PSP, Seth Fogie added an external antenna to boost his signal strength and improve his signal-to-noise ratio. Here he shows how you can do it, too.
(Then comes lots of text and many pictures.)
>>For only $20 and a little bit of effort you too can modify your own PSP to get these results. However, for all that it may help your signal this mod does severely degrade the aesthetics of your beautifully designed PSP.

Bummer. Aesthetics or quality, but not both.

PCPlus:
The PSP and the digital home

http://www.pcplus.co.uk/news/default...bsectionid=360
>>Forget about the PlayStation 3 – Sony’s little handheld is the console to watch. Consider the digital home implications...

>>The 2.0 firmware, which will be released in the UK fairly shortly, even introduced a simple web-browser. There’s no keyboard, but instant messaging or emailing using an SMS system is relatively straightforward. Expect the PSP’s PDA-like potential to be further tapped down the line, and hopefully its ability to access and play multimedia files stored remotely on a PC. Sony has reportedly trademarked ‘PSP Comics’, ‘PSP Books’ and ‘PSP Magazine’, which could hint at the shape of media downloads to come.

Long, thoughtful article. I still don't want a PSP, but it fits into a lot of scenarios.

Teleread:
How to read etexts and comics on your PSP

http://www.teleread.org/blog/?p=3522
>>[T]wo extensive tutorials from Jake at 8bitjoystick.com: how to read game FAQs on your PSP (I guess longer texts are OK too) and how to read web comics on your PSP.
...
>>Meanwhile, British retailers report they are already sold out of their stock of PSPs.

The Nintendo DS is still outselling the PSP. Given Sony's treating its customer base like a pack of indentured servants, this is no surprise. And Nintendogs is really cute too.

Ken Kutaragi has disgraced himself so much over hyping the PS3 that now even the *game* sites are mocking him. They're calling him Ken "Krazee" Kutaragi. With the XboX 360 now coming out *months* before the 3, plus devs saying its easier for them to deal with, it seems Ken has indeed become "Krazee." Another Sony market botched.

I still have yet to fondle the PSP. 5G iPod is my thing...

Sony has crossed the line as far as I'm concerned, installing malware on your computer with Sony BMG CD's.

I'm boycotting all Sony products for one year. Their actions are criminal as far as I'm concerned.

I wrote about it at Teleread -- http://www.teleread.org/blog/?p=3787
