doesn't it use up the battery?

To turn off the LED go to Control Panel --- Display --- Blink LED tab. I really don't think that the blinking LED uses that much battery since the N810/800 will hold the charge for days when it is idle.

what's "Other notifications"?

To me a waste is a waste. Being small in amount doesn't justify it.

I don't mind the email notification, but the flashing 'On' one is really annoying.

If you select "settings" then "control panel" double click on "display" you can then see the "LEDs" tab and change default settings.

Notifications by applications like the built in chat and mail, Skype, Claws Mail etc.
