Actually, Lithium-polymer batteries are lithium-ion batteries that use a polymer matrix gelled electrolyte instead of a conventional liquid electrolyte; saying that Li-po are not Li-ion is analogous to saying that AGM or gel batteries are not lead-acid. The polymer electrolyte gives more flexibility in packaging and better energy density, at some cost in high-current capability and battery life.
Most electrical stuff is the same, though; charging methods, voltages, hazards of explosion, etc.

Which one should I install? From reading the thread, I know that they're two different packages, but does one offer the functionality of both (say one is the lighter package?). Or do you need to install both to get the full benefit (say I want monitoring via graph and just something to replace my standard battery information).

do you have the services applet installed?
it got a pesky bug where it will restore services/daemons with to high a start number, resulting in them failing because other services that they depend on are not already running.
make sure that there is a S50apmd in /etc/rc2.d/.
if you find a S20apmd or anything with a number lower then 50, it should be renamed (mv) to S50apmd.
and you will need root access to do that...
seriously, that services applet should either be removed from repos or cleaned up, the interface is a accident waiting to happen.
