I stand corrected. It sounds like the first batch of 770s was pretty solid as there weren't many issues. As Nokia scaled up production to meet demand, a noticeable number of defective units got mixed in. Not sure if Nokia solved that problem, but I'm betting the oldest and the very newest tablets are less of an issue for folks. I likely got one from the first batch, but it might be difficult to determine if the newer units are truly new or just have been on the shelf for a while.

I think you are correct Grass-hoppah !!

The original batch of Nokia 770 was pretty solid and stable ( Cos I got one). The quality of the later batches are rather questionable. But then recently I saw a rather beat up Nokia 770 at a Circuit City Store. For a Floor model it looked OK. No crack between the USB and the Battery charger hole. Screen looked nice probably because they had a screen guard on it. There were some light identations on the lower right and left side edges. All in all, it looked healthy.

I could start another poll but I would want to know the range of serial numbers, and we could track it by that - and we could analyze the MTTF as well.

Mine sees use regularly as a sketchpad for a 3 and 4 year old - they love Sketch. If they can't trash it, it's got to be good.

I came to this forum after my screen went south, trying to find out if this is chronic problem or not.

Looks like it is. :-(

I was probably on my fifth reboot when it failed. I just got a replacement from CompUSA with no hassle, but haven't plugged it in yet to try it (will do that after this message is posted -- boy I'm nervous)

So now I wonder if I should reboot the thing around 10 times to try to see if it survives them all. As long as I'm within my CompUSA return window, I should be able to swap with no hassle -- should.

fwiw the bad one was from Estonia -- and so is the replacement.

Now to give it a try...

I put the new one on charge. The charging screen came up and the screen is fine. Think I'll let it get a full charge before mucking with it any more.

Have to admit, I'm really nervous about the thing now. Thinking about getting that TAP (extended warranty at CompUSA) now. I think I can add that fairly soon after the purchase. Might save me from having to ship it to Nokia down the road.
