OK, using allnameswereout's advice, I spliced Ubuntu's version of libpurple0 (libpurple0_2.5.5-1ubuntu1_armel.deb) and pidgin-data (pidgin-data_2.5.5-1ubuntu1_all.deb) into Debian using dpkg -i --force-depends-version, and that fixed the problem with Empathy and telepathy-haze. These are versions from March 10th.

I have no idea what would be involved in backporting these into maemo / RTComm Beta.

EDIT: Ok I force-installed those packages into Maemo. ICQ now works, but MSN fails with "Encryption Failed". Probably one of the depends I forced was an encryption module.

EDIT2: Looks like it could be libnss3-1d that I need. (it was the libpurple ssl libraries)

Ok, here's a hacked libpurple0 that uses mostly files from the new 2.5.5 Ubuntu build and three files from the collabora build (libmsn.so, and a couple ssl libraries) so both ICQ and MSN work again.

I'd like a few testers who use both ICQ and MSN to "dpkg -i " install this deb, and if it works for you too, I'll put it in my repository* so it is easier to install.

*technically, it is already in my repository, I just haven't updated the package lists yet; if it doesn't help, I won't bother...

UPDATE: I just installed the libpurple0 hack on my second tablet and it just worked (ICQ started working again, nothing else broke) so I'm adding libpurple0-2.5.5.qole-1 to my repository.

If you want to be able to simply upgrade your libpurple0 and get ICQ working without fuss, add my repository and then do an "apt-get install libpurple0" (it might even show up as an update in Application Manager; I don't know)

Point was, that its a small patch. Don't need a full upgrade to newest, only that patch. Its easy to release such reliability fix. It took Ubuntu more than a day though.

Because its just a version number the ICQ clients send to the ICQ server this can be easily hexedited.

Hmm, this gets me thinking. Maybe I should just assemble a group of debs in my repository that will allow you to just install a working RTComm beta, instead of those crazy instructions that you have to follow at the moment...

Hmm, anything which makes it more user friendly and less steps is good. OTOH might also as well concentrate on new Maemo 5.

(I'm using Nimbuzz, and did not have to update it because of recent change in ICQ.)

I just tweaked the instructions to use my repository instead of Chinook extras. I studied the packages, and I don't see an easier way to do it than the way I've outlined in my post.
If anyone is following them, and they don't work now, tell me so I can fix my repository to include the files that are missing.

also: there's no Nimbuzz for the tablet.

I'm using Pidgin on Chinook, and replaced my libpurple0_2.5.1-0nix2 by your hacked one. Unfortunately it messes up my contacts completely, e.g. I don't see any of my Jabber contacts any more etc. It seems it's not compatible with my revision of Pidgin. Fortunately, reverting to the old library brings back my contacts, so I just disabled ICQ for now.
