I'm developing a currency convertor for the nokia tablets and just looking for any feedback on whether people would find this useful?

The screenshot below is the current state, still very early days and needs some work to its options and interface etc, but still does what its supposed to.

The features will include;

* Live internet updates on exchange rates (currently auto updates on startup)
* Options to choose rate data source
* Saving exchange rates for later offline use
* Save selected from/to currencys between sessions
* ... and anything else which you might find useful?

Let me know what you think.

[Edit] Screenshot updated 12/04/2009.

Haven't installed yet, but offhand it looks good. Are you aware of this currency converter?

Thanks, I don't have any easily installable files at the moment, will get that done soon.

I did read some of that thread (the new thread page brought it to my attention). GCur looks a bit different from what I'm doing, although the ideas are very similar.

Another idea I was considering is having a scheduler to grab the exchange rates on a daily basis which would allow options for some sort of time span graphs and statistics etc.

I used to trade stocks, and I'd see a purpose to what you suggest if I were trading currencies. But it's not something I would be doing on my Tablet. I don't see how that sort of info is useful as a portable (Tablet) function.

The converter is designed to be portable across OS and will run on most desktops, although the Tablet is my main target. But I take your point, it could grow unwieldy for Tablet use.

I've used gcur. One improvement it needs, which you could implement into your program, is an auto-update. On start-up of the program would be good, but the best scenario would be an auto-update that doesn't require the application to be running. The other day I needed to convert $US to $Canadian, I plugged in the numbers, than realized the exchange rate was last update a month prior because I hadn't run the program since then.

I will be implementing this soon. At the moment the program automatically grabs the latest rates when it starts, this doesn't cause any noticeable delay as its fairly quick - but obviously relies on a net connection being available.

last time i played around with gcur, it was broken to near uselessness. it would not remember any settings changes, and getting updates where a no go...

the interface on this looks nice and simple, looking forward to testing it
