are u buying the backorder $220, or the more expensive one?

i've been waiting to even find out if theyre going to ship me the $220 one since the middle of march. they won't even divulge whether or not they are going to be getting them in.

its like waiting for the results of a blood test...

Since I own both these 2 devices I made a hardware compare. It is incomplete, but objective and informative.

Price-wise there is a difference as well.

I think you should look into what you want to use your device for. You're doing this; so you're on a good path IMO.

Both devices have their + and -.

I still have not been able to get canola to play youtube videos smoothly. They start out smooth, then the videos start lagging and keep playing in 1 second bursts... not sure why.
As much as I like the look and feel of Canola, it still does not work well for me for video playing.
Music playing, podcast downloading, picture viewing it's just great.

for youtube videos mytube works wonderfully. you can search download, store youtube videos and view them smoothly as you would on a desktop.

@allnameswereout , I read your hardware comparison. Thanks much! Based on my research in this forum I feel N810 has more features than iPod Touch. Although internal gps may not be great you can always get an external bluetooth receiver (cheap) along with maemomapper + it has SIP so unlimited calls in US for like 20 bucks a year + a hope of video calls to PC on skype/gtalk some day + it's open!

@dantonic
How about offline video playback? I mean playing videos from miniSD? Are they good quality? I understand that online video is not that smooth. But my bro can live with that. Thanks much!

To be fair (I always want people to get a balanced view of products before buying them).

1) The touch can get to a similar amount of features like the n810 with the use of jailbreaking to allow you to install stuff that Apple doesn't want you to have. The touch can also do SIP calls and what not but you will need a headset that has a microphone (no built in mic on the touch).

As for the video question, if you re-encode the video for the tablet then it runs perfectly. (I have a few favorite shows and movies on there myself).

Hey, just to be fair I have an N800 and not an N810.

What I was griping about before was Canola, I still haven't gotten it to work well enough for me to do away with all the other media apps. In canola, wether you're streaming or playing from the SD card, in my experience its not smooth.

Also canola is a heavy program compared to others, and since I like to: navigate with maemo mapper(I have a Holux M1000 gps receiver connected through BT), listen to music(N800 connected to the car's input audio jack), be on IRC with Xchat, and browse the internet(yes I shouldnt be doing this while driving, but I have a mount setup on my windshield right next to my steering wheel, and I don't have to take my hands off the wheel) all at the same time, I end up using the regular OS2008 media player for my music/podcasts. it is much more lightweight than canola. I have the N800 tethered to my 3g phone for internet.
From what I've heard N810 gps receiver sucks! so just be warned. My holux connects in seconds. From others' posts I've gathered that the N810 takes several minutes to connect to the satellites, when it does connect.

For video, the other apps like: mplayer and mytube, give perfect quality, no gripes whatsoever. I use DVDFab 4.0 to encode my videos, although I'm sure there might be better programs out there. I encode my dvds with ease.

hope this helps

Canola's video player being slow is due to their way of implementation of mplayer. But if you use another program that uses mplayer or mplayer itself, it works just fine.

This thread is full of excellent information. I would just like to add one thing (disclaimer -- all my opinion, I'm afraid):

The out of the box experience for the N810 is not that great, which is why I suspect many people gripe about it. Some of the out-of-the-box apps are slow, missing, buggy, or just designed poorly. However, after customising and installing some good applications the tablet is really a joy to use, and a tough act to follow!

For what it's worth, I would recommend the following installs (the links are to the install files to make it easy!):
Tear: web browser -- much faster than micro B (install -- requires a little work)
FBReader: e-book reader (install)
MPlayer: video player (install)
Maemo Mapper: map software (install)
echowb: UI theme with finger-friendly scroll bars (install)
Personal Launcher: home screen applet program launcher (install)
Personal Menu: Program selection menu (install)

Hope this helps!

miniSD tends to be expensive.
microSD with an adapter is the way to go. (Can also be used on other devices.)
Beware: some brands are problematic. I have a 4GB Kingston microSD and it works well.

I agree. The defaults Nokia gives you are terrible (and Nokia rarely updates or supports them..as made evident by SSU updates). Had Nokia actually kept updating things then it wouldn't be as bad as they are now.

Microb is usable, but Tear is much much better. I have no clue when we even had a Wayfinder update but MaemoMapper does a better job (POI could use some work). The default media player is bleck, and it can't even support Chinese letters (it turns into ???? for me).
