3rd party apps have always been updated via the application manager, even before june 2008. that's not SSU, that's debian package management.
I stand corrected that the primary purpose of the SSU was to get system software updates to the tablet without reflashing. What I was referring is that orange exclamation icon that starts flashing automatically when updates are available on any installed (third party or not) software.

We've gotten third party software updates since day one of OS2005. SSU doesn't have a thing to do with third-parties.

Well, yes. But the biggest improvement over the old update system vs the newer one is, availability of updates is automatically announced now. With the old system you had to check manually. Now you can login and know something new is available immediately.
