Today I ordered an ElmScan 5 BT scanner because this is one primary use of my N810

Carman does install on N810 ... but doesn't work

I installed Carman some days ago on my N810 and never mind that I can't create a profile. I ever thought I need the scanner hardware 1st to connect.

Today, after ordering the hardware, I just tried to compile/install the source files (*.tar.gz) at my companys laptop, running Fedora. And it does work!

Do I miss some special Python module on OS2008? I get following:
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'gtk_banner_show_animation'

I never thought I can run Carman on a 'real' PC. I ever thought Carman needs some Hildon libraries (I have no Hildon libs installed on Fedora).

So it looks like a 'real' x86 based laptop (maybe an eee-PC) is better suited for Carman than a N810??

But I have a 'little' problem.

What I use:
I use Elmscan5 with Firefly BT/serial adapter.

What works:
- Elmscan5 with serial cable on a Windows PC and the Software provided with CD-ROM
- can connect N810 with Firefly BT/serial adapter

What doesn't work:
- Carman doesn't connect with Elmscan5

Elmscan5 is untouched/closed, I haven't changed any jumpers as I must pull off the label. Firefly is set back to factory defaults (jumpers inside 1to2 3to4.. but not 9to10, all dip switches to off and reset Firefly with changing 3x dip switch 0 from on <-> off).

Can anyone tell me a working configuration please???

I played yesterday night some hours to get a connection with a serial cable (1:1 and crossover cable), different speed settings and I even didn't get this connection

I made USB host cable. Because i drive VW Golf Mk3 TDI '97, it has OBDII interface. I'm using OBDII->USB cable to connect car to PC.

Is there possibility to attach my cable through USB host to my N800 and to use Carman?

Can this be also used with OBD I?

so i got myself the elmscan 5 w/ bluetooth for use with carman and had a few questions.

i connected everything and was reading data fine from my car. i hit the record button on the live data screen and it began to record, or so i thought. after about 5 mins or so, the app would go back to the startup screen and no recorded file was shown. i would have to reconnect to the elmscan and start over. i am guessing that it runs out of space because i have little room left on the internal memory (not the internal card), as well as the removable card. i havent found any config for where it stored the recorded data. is it possible to change where the recorded files are kept?

i noticed that the app seems to bomb out, and loose connection with the elmscan every once in a while. it seems that if you try to do too much flipping around and going to a bunch of screens too fast, something chokes. i will play some more and see if i can validate this and repeat it.

i did read that you can customize the app by adding manufacturer specific codes to the sensors.xml file. though this is a handy feature, it think it may need to be reworked a touch for full feature viability. since there is no way to ensure a manufacturer dont use the same custom codes as another, it could make things confusing. if i put code XXXX into that file for my ford car, and i happen to test another car from a different manufacturer that has the same code number, but a different meaning i could confuse myself and botch the diagnostics.

moreover, the same manufacturer could use the same code on the same car, but a newer model, and change the meaning of the code. different model cars could do the same as well.

my thoughts lead me to think that being able to create a file

"sensors_$MAKE_$MODEL_$YEAR-RANGE.xml"

would allow for pluggable modularity in the app. an example file could be

sensors_Ford_EscortSE_1997-1999.xml

when i set up my profile at the start of the app, i could set that file to the custom code library and use that for each subsequent diagonstic routine.

I am not sure if there is a way to determine what kind of car you are connected to, but either picking one from a list, or pre-defining one and being able to specify a custom code library/xml file would be a cool feature.

I have the very same question about the serial OBD2 adapter I'm currently using for VAG_COM.

it's a generic serial to obd2 interface; any idea if carman can use it ?

to respond to my own comments,

obd-codes.com shows that car makers do use the same codes to mean different things, when it comes to the P-type codes. B and C type codes seem to be standardized, but that i am not 100% on that.

P-type codes are Powertrain codes
B-type codes are Body codes
C-type codes are Chasis codes

being that the same codes are used for different issues from one maker to the next, it would be nice if you could define a car maker in the profiles that you create in CarMan, and based on the maker, the proper xml file would be used to associate DTC's with the corresponding description for that manufacturer. one could simply download the xml file(s) they want, and use them for diagnostics.

in this way, the profile would be associated with a make of car, and each time the profile is selected, the codes are displayed with the correct, appropriate description.

now, am i correct in thinking that the sensors.xml file is the file that needs to be edited for the manufacturer specific codes? from the looks of it, it is but...

I have the same scanner and mine bombs out a lot ........ a lot a lot. I get maybe a mile or 2 before I have to reconnect. What can we do to try and figure out why this is happening?
