I have WLAN autoconnect enabled, but still the 770 does not connect automatically when a viable network is available. Do I need some other setting?

Someone corect me if I'm wrong but I think autoconnect will only connect to networks that it "knows" - i.e. you had connected before and chose to save settings.

Yes, the networks have been connected before. In the connection list, a green 'ok' mark is shown.

it may take a few minutes to realize that it is in the presence of a 'favorite' network

A couple of minutes would be acceptable.
RIght now I've been waiting for some 25 minutes and I do not believe that it will autoconnect anymore...

Reply to old post but try downloading the Devicescape app for the 770.
It will allow automatic logins of the WIFI everytime.
Just be sure NOT to use a custome theme with the software or it's WSOD and you'll need to reflash. Been there.

What is your Control panel -> Connectivity -> Search interval setting?

Set to Unlimited WAN idle time.
Also I have the WIFI patch installed.

Also, I do not have a "Search Interval Setting"...
