  • Screen Size
3.5" is much less usable than previous maemo devices, But it does explain the Fremantle UI decisions we all love to hate.
  • D-pad placement
Where exactly is this placed? All the article says is that it doesn't appear to be on the keypad, but I'm pretty sure there will be one. Hopefully on the side of the screen (like the N800).
  • Gsm
GDM/HSPA data: sure. Don't need or care about voice/SMS.
  • Carrier lockin
Definite dealbreaker. Device "subsidies" are just a tax on innumeracy IMHO. I'm pretty sure it'll be sold unlocked (like all other Nokia devices) as well.
  • Size
Alleged device size is 111mm x 59.7mm, screen size is ~ 76.2mm x 45.7mm. That seems to allow plenty of space for a d-pad, but still leaves way too much wasted space around the screen.
  • Processor
OMAP3 has been public knowledge for a lont time and is probably the best option currently available.
  • Ram
Could be better, but would do nicely for Diablo. Not sure what the Fremantle memory footprint will be though, and I'm a bit concerned about the 3:1 swap/RAM ratio.
  • Camera
Also well known. Don't need it, but might be fun to play with if the software side is open enough.
  • Keypad
If it really is only 3 rows deep I'll be very disappointed. Just look at the N97 - almost everyone else does it better (including the E-series team within Nokia).
  • Battery
    I think/hope the 1320MAh figure isn't accurate - the similarly sized N97 comes with a 1500MAh BP-4L (same as the N810).

Also, what about retail price? The N97 has almost identical specs except the much lower pixel density (3.5" 800x480 would be ~266ppi) and goes for 500 quid over here. I guess that would make the "N900" approximately 50% more expensive at launch than the N810. Maybe there is some truth to those ad-subsidised rumours after all - by including everything and the kitchen sink Nokia might have painted themselves into a corner pricing-wise :-(

I'm not sure I can spare that much cash to spend on features I don't need (voice, camera, accelerometers) especially if the ones I do care about (screen, input) all take a turn for the worse. I may have to skip this one and hope for a more tablety future device... Is an OMAP3 N800 with HSPA data too much to ask for?

Of course. Just leak some news about N900 having 320x240 display and things will get way, way more negative.

Might be wrong, but 1320mAh sounds a lot like the IIRC 5800's battery (BL-5J)

EDIT: Okay. The screen complaint is no longer at 100% anymore. Speak up. WHO FORGOT TO CHECK IT ?

those people should be given one of those 3.5" devices for free as a punishment, right?

Well, at 3.5" and with the Fremantle touchy-feely UI on top it might as well be QVGA. The days when you could take advantage of the full 800 pixel wide screen to display lots of useful info at once are sadly gone.

You realise that T-Mobile tie in is only relevant to the US and there is an entire planet out here?

Just buy an unlocked non-subsidised model - like any other phone that has ever existed.

I am absolutely fine with that. Nokia's non-N-series devices are cheaper, sturdier, and seem to have fewer production defects. The N-series devices look almost as if Nokia does not expect you to use them for longer than 6-12 months or so.

We'll based on the SDK we thought there were going to be two maemo based devices (RX-51/71). We don't know which one this is. Is this the "lead device" or the follow-on (i.e. iPhone and iTouch).
