I'm not going to dignify the statement of MULF (not even with a quote in my reply), but I am going to say this: We are very committed to the community, but we will not stick to the Maemo 4 UI. If the Maemo 4 is a deal breaker for you, then I'm afraid we might loose you because we have redesigned the UI to appeal to more consumers including existing ones. This meant some compromises.

Has anybody noticed based on the alpha SDK that the UI layout has changed? Hasn't anybody missed the task switcher on the left side of the desktop? ... If a Maemo 5 device would have a 4 inch display, the application would actually have more real estate than before (except if it would run only in full view mode)

Yes, my immediate response to the specs is about the screen size. I always use full-screen for my apps. That's gone now. There is no full-screen anymore.

It is not about the change in the UI IMHO but the overall smaller screen. If you take a look at my few other postof mine you'll see that I'm not a developer, coder or anything like that, just a day to day user with a hang for playing around.
From the enduser's point of view: I rarely see the sidebar (mostly after reboot or checking weatherforecast) everything else is done with apps in fullscreen.
Usecases: Browsing, IM (Pidgin), Media (Mediastreamer, Canola, mplayer, build in mediaplayer app), Reading (fbreader, evince), feeds (feed circuit) - tasks (I think) 95% of the users are doing, correct me if I'm wrong there
If you'd ask me, these are all apps that hugely benefit from the bigger screen the N800 offers compared to 3,5''
So screensize would be a step back in *my* usecases
