The whole Council thing is a "labour of love" for all of us. There are really no benefits for the current council members. This year's Summit falls outside of our term, so no dinner with Ari, and we were all very involved community members before, so we probably would have been just as likely to receive any "developer discounts," event invitations, or whatever if we had stayed "private citizens". Actually, the Fremantle Stars and Mer developers are getting all the swag / junket love these days. You want to get sponsored trips or something? Go help developing Mer. Don't be jealous of the council members.

If there are people out there who are not convinced by what I'm saying here, then I'm looking forward to the next elections. I'm hoping the biggest dissenters will run, and I promise I will vote for them. They will discover just how much "power" we council members have. And it will be fun seeing a council full of former dissenters suddenly discovering that they're "the man" now and they were tilting at windmills and punching straw men the whole time.
I apologize if my comments came across in this manner. I was trying to say something like the exact opposite of that. In a nutshell: those with the perceived-power of council membership should set an example of good behavior, listening and leadership. Not be an example of the opposite.

I find that if those with power in a community, even if it is just perceived, start acting The Right Way [TM], it trickles on down to new members.

Succinct and too true. Thanks.

I like your comments, perspective, sense of humor, and humility, and I am glad you are on the council despite your original reluctance to do so. Some people have rubbed some people the wrong way, were wearing their Council badge while doing it and unfortunately it got translated to the Council as a whole.

That can't be it, I'm a non-developer too . I meant to say that the possible reason comments weren't submitted before is they were perceived as moot because openness was already stated, and therefore don't read too much into the lack of comments at that time. I think direction is being given now and comments re openness should be considered now even though no such comments were given before.

Hello guys !

Maybe i' mistaken but i think these pages are JUST a forum about some MINOR (but interesting) electronic devices called NIT.

Many people try here to share their skills, knowledge and goodwill, probaby with a common goal : to use their NIT as best as possible. That's nice ... really ... Thank ya everybody, i wouldn't use my NIT so much without you !

But i believe that nobody here should focus too much on this adventure, unless they are hired by Nokia to do so.

Get a girlfriend, or a boyfriend (or both ) focus on more important things in your life ... and then you will probably not expect too much of this community ...

If your expectations are too high, you will be disapointed, I don't think this community can be a fulfillment by itself, it's just a nice way to exchange and help each others to use our NIT.

totololo: It always starts that way. "I'm just doing this for a bit of fun. I can quit any time. Then I'll get back to focusing on important things."

But alas, for some of us, it ends up terribly. We find ourselves compulsively refreshing our browsers on the forums, obsessing over every rumour, over-reacting and escalating emotional exchanges, or even, worst of all, waking up one morning and finding we're on the maemo.org community council.

So please, for your own health and safety, leave now, and never return. For the first days, maybe weeks, you'll wonder what is being said on the forums, perhaps even wonder what is being said about you, but you must stay strong. You must resist.

Or someday you'll find yourself on the council yourself, wondering what the heck just happened.

The next stage is you'll be keeping daily track of your "Thanks" count and commenting on the board when you think somehow it's gone down. :-X

Ooh, that would be important. Kinda serious, actually. Especially for the married guys.

"Life threatening" might be the most appropriate word!

Yes and no.

The fact is that there is something unique here: a synthesis of open source and commercialization unprecedented in scope or nature.

If this community were solely as you described it, the tablets and possibly Maemo would have died long ago. But thanks to many who stepped up to fill gaps left (some intentionally) by Nokia, there is potential for Maemo and devices running it.

The same can be said for Linux in general-- were it not for the dedicated "no life" sorts testing and contributing code then Linux would have also died long, long ago.

So while yes a part of this community involves helping newcomers and just shooting the you-know-what, there IS a larger purpose here that you fail to consider. I respectfully ask that you think about it.
