And now for today's dose of High Irony:

Want to bet that get a lot more response than either you or Nokia think? Right now a good used N810 might be a wonderful complement to my N800. I'd rather spend $150-200 on an N810 than that much or more on a phone that I need a contract to get that price on. I suspect there are a lot more people out there that are thinking along those lines right now.

No tablet format = No money from me. I'll buy a used N810 rather than a new one to avoid putting money in Nokia's pocket for a dead end device. Yes I know there is community support, but I also suspect that someone will step up to fill the gap that Nokia looks like they will leave between smartphones and netbooks.

I'm afraid it looks legit. Lots of info lines up: the comments by Texrat and other enlightened individuals; the use of the term "Rover" matches an accidental leak of the name in a changelog commit a number of months ago; johnx had guessed at a 3.5" screen based on the LCD part number in the kernel.

Admittedly, the picture of the device shown by cellpassion.com seems to be some kind of initial product render:
  • Diablo screenshot
  • Missing "fn" key (and probably "Chr", assuming there is one - anyone checked the keyboard map?)

I don't think an out-of-date picture is enough to rule out the rest of the info, though.

Another interesting tidbit from the thread I referenced above:

Folks, what a day. I only now was able to catch on the whole thread!

Meanwhile my desktop running XP got me again in trouble (totally new for me: the ethernet controller driver was missing and I could not reinstall it!).

Sorry for the rant! Let's get back to the topic.

I think it would make sense for Nokia to consider developing an eco-system around linux-based devices. The system could include a smartphone-type device, a regular tablet sized device and a third product with a larger screen. This would make us all happy.

In my case (not a developer and not even thinking of trying to access command line): provided the software is really polished and the voice protocols are well tested (Nokia has enough experience on that side) I would probably get the maemo smartphone once my E51 dies (I am pretty happy with it though). It will be bulkier but the screen (and applications) will be more compelling.

I would also use a larger maemo device (5-6' screen) to replace my laptop in most travel, browse the web at home, answer email, watch moves (in any format please), and review photo books (in synch with my PC files, but at a lower resolution). Contact information and email would be accessible on all devices and on the Internet. (This way I will finally be able to abandon Lotus Organizer).

I would probably keep the N810 for any other use, including my nightly readings of this forum.

In all this the key is software: I would use the devices in a real world made of MS Office applications and so on. I need to be able to work on .doc, .ppt and xls. files. With software that is able to handle them and will be easy to install. And, oh Lord, please give us a seamingless synch system for contacts details.

Well I want the answer, what I think you mean is that we may not like the answer.

My guess is that the answer is 'total indifference'.

What do you think it is?

I'm eating my socks already OTOH in a super-sinister-conspiracy scenario that might mean that it *is* the reason behind all the secrecy and a short, close to launch, super bombastic airplane/TV covered announcement. In that case, the Peter thanks can still make sense

More dredging results. This article from April suggests that we might just need to wait a bit longer to get our hearts' desire:

I don't think it's the only tablet device though - there seems to be little reason to wait till Q4 for the first release of a tablet, now that Maemo 5 is entering beta testing soon-ish...
In a follow-up post, chlettn points to Nokia World 2009 (September 2-3) as the likely unveiling / announcement date for these devices.

As long as there is a tablet, I am happy.

I wonder what kind of damage to Nokia would have happened if instead of explaining to us why we really do want a small screen someone from Nokia (qgil, peter@maemo, etc.) said "there will be a tablet".
