My personal decision is that I don't want to be associated with Maemo.org.

So I won't be joining or voting. My reason is that there are lots of fine organizations out there that I don't choose to join. I have to feel that I have a lot in common with an organization in order to join it. I don't feel that about Maemo.org.

If I am eventually required to join or stop participating, I will stop participating. So if you hear a sudden silence, that might be me.

In the meantime, my motto is, FREE ITT!

It's funny how every major issue here seems to come down to communication...

Not yet , although my stylus keyboard (as well as my fullsize keyboards) are begging for a break), and my wife was interupting me earlier

Seriously, thanks to Texrat for starting this thread. It has given me hope we are all learning a little something and starting to make some headway to a better future.

(except for that lousy new phone/not-tablet everybody seems to be talking about IMHO)

It "was" a nice ending , but lemmy's not blue in the face yet!

I think many people are now wondering if there is even a community worth fighting for?

I sure hope I didn't contribute to such a conclusion... it wasn't intended.

Yeah about that, my wife didn't want to be married to a smurf

I believe that there is a community worth fighting for. (@ Texrat - I think penguinbait is referring to the new maemo phone)

However, at this point (for me) that may depend on what devices Mer gets ported to, provided of course that Mer doesn't eventually end up as its' own community.

In the meantime, its' now a waiting game to see what new tablet devices are released when by who for how much.

Sorry, I was referring to the rampant rumors of the tablet demise

And if there is no tablet? Then there is not much need for a community. Again, I mean for me

Okay, this thread has cooled off and enough time passed that I feel comfortable doing a post mortem.

I want to thank everyone first by recognizing the incredible amount of self-restraint that's been employed since this dialog. The good news is that discourse has been open, civil and productive to a very large extent. Kudos to the community for that!

The not-so-good news is that I see the participant level dropping off significantly lately, to the point that I see 0 visitation on Talk sections for uncomfortably long stretches of time. I am sure this relates to Penguinbait's points above.

The first natural response to an absence of information/leadership is an uproar, and we've seen that. Nokia's failure (regardless of reason) to produce a steady stream of hardware and software updates for the tablet product line has not been well-met, and understandably so.

The second phase is apathy... and we're seeing a lot of that now. I'll bet the unique visitor stats look pretty poor right now... it feels like a handful of us taking up thread space.

Hopefully a new product announcement will have the same result as it did before, and bring community involvement back up. Of course with that may also come renewed anxiety.

But I'm hopeful this community has reached a turning point. I doubt anyone remembers but I posed the idea of a council looong ago because I knew we had reached a level requiring a more formal and stable interface with Nokia. I was glad to be the "water carrier"-slash-firewall for a long time but even happier when Quim broke down and signed up-- one of the best things to happen here IMo and I am thrilled at his current level of engagement.

To an extent this community has lost some of the initial passion but even without the problem of release gaps that can be a natural outcome of growth. The goal now is to recover the passion that once came from a mass of independent thought but find a way to insitigate and focus it around clearly-defined projects. It can be difficult, but also very possible and highly rewarding... largely because THINGS GET FINISHED.

Anyway, I will factor as much of our growth experience as I can into my community engagement proposal. Even if I do not receive sponsorship to Amsterdam, I still intend on completing it because I believe it has great value for Maemo and in general use.

Thanks to everyone for their continued involvement, and especially to those who contributed to this thread in any fashion. I hope it was a sum positive experience.
