I purchased a second hand N800 last week, and so far I really like what it can do. However, yesterday when I visited the si dot com site, there was an advertisement for the Wii or some other electronic device that I could close (at least, I didn't see a close button in the ad).

Is there an adblocker or popup blocker download that I can use? I am running OS2008 and know nothing about Linux, having been a Windows person all my life.

Thanks in advance.

First off, welcome to the community.

Secondly, I should mention that the NITs are great devices but that their magic only reveals itself after the user gets at least a little bit into the linux that's under the hood.

I personally use the hosts file method and it works well enough for me that Salon.com is the only popup I've seen for a while now, though rarely a contentless window opens, I think it may be netflix.

Here's a thread that gives some instruction on it:

See post number 10, specifically. You'll need a way of getting root privilege in order to modify this file, look that up in the wiki. Once you've gotten root, do the code in post #10.

I've used the privoxy method almost since I got my N800 (2.5 years ago). I still use the default config, in other words I haven't needed to edit anything.

Re. the cons about privoxy in the wiki: It's true that privoxy has to be enabled or disabled per configured network. So, it won't ever work for those cases where you connect to a network you don't plan to save (e.g. a visit-once open access point in a place you don't re-visit). But for saved connections you can save two configs for the same network, one with privoxy enabled and one without. That takes care of those (rare) cases where privoxy negatively interferes with something -- just switch "network" to the version without privoxy (that is, proxy,) enabled.
