We've heard before that Maemo is being prepared for phone usage. That we just saw some evidence of that, doesn't mean that the new code is for the N900.

So, I don't think there's any strong indication in the fact that we've confirmed something we already knew.

Um, nowhere is the word "phone" mentioned in the title, or even in the article the first post linked to.
From the article linked in the original post of the thread (bold emphasis from me):

Some of the mentioned software features:

(...)
* All SMS and IMs accessible from one view
* Cellular voice or VOIP both supported

There you go. Not just a GSM data device (like several other MIDs that have been announced in the last year or so). The fact that it clearly says that both cellular voice and VOIP will be supported indicates that they are directly stating that this device will have a voice capability that is not just VOIP based.

The device being discussed is a cell phone. The device in question has both cellular voice, and SMS. It's clearly a cell phone, in addition to everything else it's supposed to be.

Clearly you didn't read the first few days worth of the thread, because that was one of the main discussion points for the first week or so (that and the screen size; but the two are related, since "it's a cell phone" is the justification for the smaller screen size).

Isn't it also clear that it says it's SUPPORTED vs REQUIRED or INCLUDED? Also, there is no mention of compatibility for a SIM card, making this, IMHO, less likely for cellular use.

Yeah, the N97 is available SIM-free, but wasn't that a focus of mention before it's release? I'd be hard pressed to believe something if it isn't stated. Wouldn't you?

A lot of Garmin's products have 3,5" screens.

How 'bout you don't tell me what I did or didn't do... Howzat for clarity.

My post was prompted by your statement about the topic of this thread... OK, clearly you think you are the only one who is entitled to an opinion about this and if that is the case then clearly this thread should be closed because you have already addressed the subject.

qole, you may be right but as someone stated earlier in this thread (that is if I saw it clearly ), jumping this quickly into a phone running on Maemo may be be setting the OS up for failure.

... and I agree with UserID10T "supports" is a far cry from "provided" in ad speak.

BTW, the N800 "supported" video chat.

So, the theory is that these additional capacities would be added and the device would be made smaller for no particular reason?

To me, the only real reason for doing this stuff would be because you're producing a phone.

So, I must have missed a point somewhere, sorry about that.

What would be the reason for these changes if the new device ISN'T a phone?

I'm for the N800-size screen, but even if it isn't a phone, making it more carryable is a plus (I'd really like a 7" screen on a flat 2" x 3" tablet ); it's not the sacrifice I would ask for, but it's not as if there's no point.

And maybe the phone capability is like the unannounced FM capability of the N800; maybe they just want to see what all the good geeks do with it.

Nonetheless, my guess is still that we're first getting a phone, not the Nokia unPhone©.

Your guess is as good as mine... as well as anybody else's. I'm not presuming to know, nor am I advocating anything.

The point is, guesses are all they are. Our opinions will be based on nothing more than that until Nokia's press release.

Speaking of FM capabilities has there been any evidence of HD radio on the N900?

regarding the screen size - isn't the assumption that the "Rover" will have a flush screen? If this is true, the jump from 4" to 3.5" shouldn't really be that bad (I would take it any day).
I still hope the leaked size info is wrong, as "rover" is way to chubby (but sadly that seems to be what Nokia likes).
