Since a lot of you are likely unfamiliar with the history of repositories and Maemo, I'd like to point you to my blog post on the subject from last year.

I outlined some of the benefits of a centralized distribution system in that post, but I'd like to summarize the why of things to those of you unfamiliar with the issues:

Users get the clearest and most immediate benefits. Packages in Extras . . .
  • . . . are in an easily accessible and reliable location that is available on the first boot out-of-box.
  • . . . comes with a certain minimum level of quality and active, monitored response channels.
  • . . . wont disappear due to repositories going down or moving (ask 770 owners how this goes).
Developers get . . .
  • . . . ready-made hosting and distribution so they don't have to waste energy setting up and maintaining their own.
  • . . . access to a huge audience that encompasses nearly every Maemo user.
  • . . . a paid and volunteer support network to help with packaging, QA, and documentation.
  • . . . access to maemo.org's bug tracking services.
  • . . . builders to offload compilation workloads that will generate quality binaries.
Nokia benefits as well, with . . .
  • . . . a large catalog of "free" software for users of their platform and users.
  • . . . a distribution mechanism for unofficial Nokia packages.

For a modest input of effort, everybody involved reaps large benefits.

Yes, I'd much rather see an AppStore-like approach to the Application Manager and make sure Downloads and maemo.nokia.com are setup as interfaces to that (rather than the impressions that's given now of a seperate app download).

This repository fiasco (from a user's perspective) is the result of a clear lack of leadership. I don't want to read a thread from the Nokia employee in charge of all-things-packaging asking for opinions. I want him to take action and just tell us how it's gonna be. F*ck the developers (of whom I am one); we know how to fix our sh*t and we will conform to a working, flexible system. But stop screwing the users: Lead them down one simple, easy-to-find, working path, and if they decide to stray it's their choice. Don't make it easy for them to wander off into a steaming pile of developer sh*t. If Nokia is serious about their smart appliance future, they better at least get this right. But please don't reinvent the wheel; rape and pillage from something tried-and-true and go with it. Enough already.

In my opinion there is only repository outside of extras with significant content. That's qole's repository with Tear.

From my perspective current situation is quite good. But for everyone who installs all 50 repositories it's total disaster

Put your stuff to extras. That's how it's gonna be

I swear you guys are temping me to go create my own repo , naw I'll just stick with giant crazy deb installs. This kind of goes back to the creation of a separate hackers forum. Either we let people do whatever they want, or you try to separate working from beta software. You can't just say use extras or take down your repo, some things just don't belong in the extras repo.

Some things dont belong in any repos.

Now, I would like to state that while you may fuсk daperl any way you like (he specifically permitted it), I am not giving you permission to fuсk me, as a developer. Any other developers out there willing to join daperl in his plea?

Besides, Jeremiah is the maemo.org debmaster and not a Nokia employee. Just in case that makes any difference.

Thanks for the clarification, but I'm not sure it makes a difference. He should take fms by the horns and make it happen.

I'm hosting a private repository because I can't put my app to extras. Should I close the repository and just stop supporting the app?
