I think maemo is a hedged bet, alongside trying to shine up symbian.
That is, they are trying multiple things at the same time, ready to drop whatever seems to hit it off with the masses best.
And even if they loose share on the high end, they can probably maintain the low end, as well as supply other electronics (like say satellite receiver boxes, or mobile network hardware thru nokiasiemens).
