Another option, if you want speed info, is to use Carman. Yes, Carman is mostly about OBDII but it goes do mapping via GPS (much like M.Mapper) and it has a trip "profile" that includes charts of speed etc. It might give you what you want while biking.

I'm currently working on a solution that is able to draw offline maps based on OpenStreetMap data. The map drawing code is advanced and likely needs more performance tuning and some improvements regarding the drawing itself (the map could simply look a little bit nicer).

The code is in C++ and draw into a cairo surface. While it currently is a binary it could be factored out into a library. If anybody is intersted in participating. I can definitely need some help to get this done in reasonable time.

Note that there is currently also Navit for map darwing and routing with similar aproach and libchamplain for map drawing only.

I also recently added some code to support route tracking and KML export to GPSJinni (extras-devel), which could also need some help...

don't know if this is the speed info that you're looking for, but i stumbled on http://utrack.crempa.net/ a while ago. gives some info that i haven't been able to extract from mm or (especially) roadmap. i'm just now starting to play with navit again--it's much improved over the last year or so.

Have you tried "Hike"? I think it's in the standard repositories. You scan a paper map, calibrate using 3 or 4 points, and it can record tracks as well.

I made a calibrated map from the paper map of the Parc de la Gaspesie (section St-Octave, Mont Logan and Lac Thibault) I can send you if you want :-)

Since calibration is a bit of a pain on the tablet, I compiled the hike source on my linux box, which works well enough for that. Then it's just a matter of transferring the .cal file to the tablet.

But yes, I'd love to have vector topo on the N800. Maybe qlandkarte can be ported? Then the Ibycus canadian topo data could be used, which is straight from the Canadian gov. 1:50000 database.

OTOH, going hiking/canoeing might not be very healthy to a N8x0, so I stick to my (somewhat buggy) eTrex Venture Cx.

Joe.
...looking forward to my next trip to la Mauricie...
