Excuse my ignorance, but I'm hoping for some help in installing a patch to OS2008 to lock desktop applets, discussed in this thread.

In the patch "Binaries for people to try drag lock v2" from the bug page at https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2639, there are three files with "-dev" in the name, three files with the same name except "-dbg", and three files with neither string. And one file with "-doc" in the name.

Which files do I install?

Can I install them just by opening the files in File Manager?

Is there a way to back up my system first, in case of problems?

Take the three files with neither string as you don't want to develop (dev) or debug (dbg) yourself.
In Diablo opening them from file manager should start Application Manager to install them. Hopefully. :-)

I get a tar.gz2 file that I don't know how to open.
This is getting tiresome and am moving onto something else.

Don't blame you a bit.

I used bunzip2 (I got a bz2 - are you sure it's a gz2?) and then WinZip to unpack the file on my PC. I'll copy them to the N810 with the USB cable.

In the same folder there are some deb files, but better search the forum for them - I'm sure Qwerty12 has posted somewhere here about the binaries.
