Hey guys im alright with this techincal stuff but im alittle lost on how to find the program apt-get or red pill if anyone could help that would be great.

my first bit of advice is dont play with this unless you know what you are doing. you can easily get you 770 to a state where it needs reflashing.

to run apt-get you need to install a terminal, eg xterm. see http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog2006

I enabled red pill and had nothing but trouble afterwards. I ended up reflashing four times.

Stubborn burro that I am, I will probably enable it again. If I have to reflash yet another time, I will probably give up on that exercise.

well i installed the "red pill" and not knowing what the hell it is but i heard that what i need to get rid of extra crap in my extras folder and also deleting built in software. Tech guys please help. You are the heart and soul of the nokia 770 you make the users happy with what they bought, anyways so how do i do this guys....This operating system for this thing is so complicated how could they ever expect people to be so amazed by its features and stuff if its such a pain to use

Just to be clear... The Red Pill disables a filter, it doesn't do anything to install or uninstall software from your system.

It allows you to see EVERYTHING that's installed on the device, and in repositories, which gives you the power to make more choices. With any power comes danger, and this is no different. If you're looking at the Installed Apps with RED PILL enabled, and you delete a core OS piece, then that's certainly an issue.

If you're unfamiliar with Linux in general, and you don't have an explicit walk-through of what you want to do, then do NOT enable RED PILL.

Please remember that RED PILL is a backdoor - it's not meant to be used by the casual user. Linux is not Windows - there are many "weirdly" named components that are key to the system running.


Well, the OS is NOT meant to be seen in the way that you're looking at it - from a shell prompt and/or with RED PILL enabled.

99% of the world will never see what you're looking at. Though some will have to come to understand AppManager in order to install new apps that Nokia doesn't provide directly, but even that number will be small.

I suspect that 90% or more of the buyers of the N800 will be happy with how it is out of the box, and randomly check AppManager for new things to be offered by Nokia. Add another 5-7% of folks that will be guided by a buddy into a new repository, and that leaves the geeks that are hard core Linux users.

The GUI here is VERY well done in terms of hiding the inner workings of installing apps into Linux. The whole apt-get thing is "real fun" from the command line.

Well for me, I had to learn about AppManager and Maemo (etc) to figure out how to get GAIM working for Aim chatting.

And in 1 day with these msg boards, I learned there are a bunch of great (non-Nokia supported) apps.

1. Don't install or enable ANYthing without fully understanding it.

2. "complicated" is relative. The 770 and N800 operating systems are extremely simple when compared to some other computing devices. And they're only as complex as you make them out to be; the typical user never needs to open the hood. If you feel the need to, you should educate yourself above the typical level.
