Hello, first post here.

I am trying to install MC (which is one of the first things I do on any Unix platform), but I am not able to install it due to some ncurses5 conflict. The same conflict prevents me from installing some text editors too, so I am stuck with vi, which I always hated, for 10 years now

My hardware is a N810, and the OS version is 5.2008.43-7
Thanks for your time

Can you post the exact error message of the conflict ?

Application packages to update: libncurses5 (5.5-5)
Conflict with application packages: OS2008 Feature Upgrade (1:5.2008.43-7)

Trying to update libncurses5 manually will show the same error.

Ok, from the apt-get command:

Nokia-N810-43-7:/bin# apt-get install mc
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run âapt-get -f installâ to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
mc: Depends: file but it is not going to be installed
Depends: ncurses-base
xmms-mp4: Depends: libfaad0 (>= 2.6) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try âapt-get -f installâ with no packages (or specify a solution).

Your problem is related to a dodgy install of xmms-mp4. apt will refuse to install anything else while that problem is still there.

Either install the package xmms-mp4 is asking for; or remove xmms-mp4.
