That gets you lousy support (either lousy HW support from the OS, or lousy customer support from the HW vendor).

I avoid that, wherever possible. Case in point, Ubuntu-UMPC on the Samsung Q1 Ultra ... the screen rotation feature just plain doesn't work (it tries, and fails).

Plus, my OS of choice would be "Maemo". Last I checked, it doesn't have an Atom port ;-)

I wonder what software is needed on a Netbook device, that isn't already in Linux?

That Ultra-Cool software ... you know .. that bloats your storage, slows down your computer, and makes if vulnerable to viruses and spyware.

It's all the rage these days! :-)

There are some differences though - Nokia makes reliable high-quality hardware and has a strong distribution channel with a reputation for excellence when it comes to telephone software. This makes the Booklet more attractive to the average user and can command a higher pricepoint. There is overlap between the mobile phone - tablet - netbook segment so this move is logical. It is disappointing however not to have a device like this running Maemo, but perhaps something similar is in the pipeline?

I'm not surprised much by the decision though. Maybe this plays alongside the other developments, such as Microsoft agreeing to develop a version of Office for Nokia handhelds. MS gives up mobile OS share, gains more netbook share?

Well, without Karel posting, you have stepped up admirably.

If we're talking about Fremantle, you're probably right. But what about Diablo? If you didn't have to go "all thumbs" for Fremantle and worked to improve the Diablo UI wouldn't that be suitable for a Netbooksy-like form factor?

I was hoping for something innovative, like the TouchBook but with the Nokia touch & quality build. Instead we get the Bang&Olufsen of netbooks...

Well, Diablo was still designed for 4" stylus screens, for a constrained mobile device. So that means one application on screen at the time, one view at a time. Those are pretty bad limitations for a 10" lapt... Booklet. Application UI's were designed with these constraints in mind, so blowing them to 10" would in most cases just break and not look very nice.

Of course nothing is impossible, given enough time, motivation and resources.
