Using what I think is standard linux I have entered in xterm while in bash2:

NOTECASE_HELP=/apathname;env NOTECASE_HELP

but env reports NOTECASE_HELP is not set.

What's am I doing wrong?

You should do it like this:

export NOTECASE_HELP=/apathname

Now how do I keep it from being deleted when I quit xterm?
