Can anyone tell me what type of files are backed up on the N800 when the 'other files' box is checked please.

Reason I'm asking is that when running the facility my usual backup size of 33MB has suddenly shrunk to 5 MB for no apparant reason!

Compared with the last backup content, the device is not backing up 'other files' although the box is checked hence the reduction in file size backed up. I don't recall deleting much since the last backup, but now I afraid I'm missing important files each time I run backup now.

I did try to run a backup with only the 'other files' box ticked, but got the message ' No data to backup.

I am getting worried! Please help...

Thanks

Backups are just directories on the memory card containing zip files. You can transfer them to your computer, extract and examine them for differences.

I ran into something like that too. I found that if "E-mail messages" was not checked neither would the "settings" box and this resulted in a much smaller back-up file. In other words, if you unchecked E-mail because you want to save space, "settings" will also become unchecked automagic like and you will loose that information as well.

BTW, "other files" has always been greyed out when I do a back-up/restore.

Doh:

I just tried backing up "other files" by itself and was successful.

It saved Root/home/user/MyDocs/.documents as "other files" in my Backup directory.

Oh yes I've been down that road - not recommended if you can't remember your email settings when away from home. What I have done since is to copy the entire email settings from the various tabs, pdf'ed it and have it stored in my docs just in case. Occasionally I'll need to re-enter certain settings again for googlemail as now and again the built in email client stops picking up mail, ok on other accounts thought.

Dohh...just found out the 'other files' were - my Maemo Maps folder which I deleted, and that I guess would be the largest proportion of my backup.

Thanks Imo, at least I'll have more space for other stuff now, and I'll keep a larger archive backup of backups now. Probally leave the 'other files' box unchecked from now on.

EDIT Yo dude what type of files did it save under 'other files' when you did the backup? Gotta turn in for the night now but I'll pick this up tommorow if any replys.

That's the thing... in that directory I have a custom gtkrc system file that I moved there to be able to transfer it easy like, the PDF osso_software_copyright, and a sub directory of User guides...
It only backed up the gtkrc file.

In the greyed out restores I had the same PDF's but didn't have the gtkrc file on the device when I performed the backup.

Were your maps in this directory as well?

i try to avoid many having files stored on the device itself and keep the backup folder on the external card.
it's never grown bigger than ca. 40mb. i think the rss feedreader files may be backed up as "e-mail messages" since whenever i update my 28 feeds "e-mail messages" is a much larger percentage of the backup.
