Is there some sort of backend we can use for this? If there isn't, this idea won't be possible.

Yes, it does. No, I don't think there's a way around it yet.

Unless your holster case is super tight and your camera slider is severely worn, I don't see this happening. Ever.

I don't understand this one... if the widget is on-screen, you won't be seeing the PDF... so... huh?

Probably better implemented in the PDF reader itself. Isn't there similar functionality in FBreader?

Im not sure if its just me but i would like a slideshow widget for selected pictures (Maybe simular in design to the one used by HTC (Stacked pictures sorta look)) pressing it could launch the photos app and maybe swiping up/down for next/last image.

I have been thinking of this as well. With the always-connected mentality, I would like it to pull images from the web as well. Accounts on flickr or new images posted by friends on facebook for instance.

Edit: How about an accompanying application so you could pull up a fullscreen slideshow (think photoframe)? Screensaver for those not worrying about battery perhaps?

Yeah i like that. Hope it wouldent be too hard to implament or too hard for the end user to set up; i.e having to enter multiple account details and refresh rates just for a desktop widget.

That's going to be a very high bandwidth use. I hope that if anyone implements this feature, there's a major warning about it.

I agree. Dataplans will hopefully get cheaper and cheaper however (or rather it will get more and more accepted and common to pay the prices perhaps).

Perhaps you could make it so it only polls for new data when it's on wifi, rather than cell?

You can put web page bookmarks on your desktop, too. So you need to make something about your widget that is more compelling or convenient than that.

I understand, but I've got a few things going for me:

1) Speed. It takes twice as long to load two web-pages as it does one. For example, let's say I want to search Ebay and have a shortcut on my desktop for ebay.com. I could click the shortcut and wait for ebay to load, then enter my query in the field and hit search. With the widget, I could select to search ebay and search it without having to load anything extra. This could also be useful if you are paying for data usage.

2) Convenience. It is all there. You don't have to create a bunch of shortcuts, just download the software and the functionality is there.

3) Space. Say there are fifteen sites I search on a regular basis. Well, 15 shortcuts take up a lot of desktop space, while my applet is always the same relatively small size (say, twice a shortcut) if it's fifteen sites I like to search or 50.

4) Finger-friendliness. How many websites have finger friendly search bars? Not so many. My applet is "designed with fingers in mind".
