I suspect you're far better in English than most of us English speakers are in Finnish.

(and better than most of us Americans are in any other language).

(or, for that matter, than we are in English).

Uh, well i guess my spin on the page was a bit different from where some people envisioned it would go. Feel free to sign up and add content, but i think the stuff i worked in is pretty polished so please don't nuke it wholesale...

I was going to suggest "Introduction to Maemo", but we already have a page (the landing page for Maemo.org) called that. The landing page is actually a bit less newbie-friendly than the wiki entry is at this point. I think we need a link at the very top of the intro (landing) page that says "Introduction to Maemo" or "Beginners guide to Maemo" and that goes to this wiki page, while renaming the landing page (tab) to "Welcome".

Then, we can make the wiki page cover a bit more about why, in layman's terms, a person would want a Maemo device and to join the Maemo community.

I don't have the rights to do that; who does? What do you think?

I wouldn't offer it as an official variant but I just though n00bi went with wiki.

I went ahead and moved the page to http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_Basics. If someone with mod access to the other wiki (wth do we have two wikis on maemo.org?) could rejigger the landing page as i described above, it would be great.

To review:
* Rename "Intro" tabbed landing page to "Welcome"
* Link to the http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_Basics somewhere on it, possibly indicating that it's intended for people new to the whole idea.
* We'll add more info on the Maemo Basics wiki page along the lines of "What can I do with Maemo".

Ossipena updated the page with a "What can i do with Maemo" and i added to it. Still need someone to make this accessible from landing page.

Incidentally, the landing page is pretty ugly right now.

I'm trying to expand on the Maemo explanation for the new user page and I don't want to say the wrong thing.

Can someone more knowledgeable put together a short paragraph (for a new user who doesn't know Linux's sudo from Phil's Sussudio) on how you would update:

1) an N810 with the original OS2008 to OS2008 Diablo.
and, if it is theoretically different:
2) an N800 with OS2007 to OS2008 Diablo.
and, if it is possible:
3) an N770 with OS2005/6 to OS2008 Diablo.

I'm assuming that the explanation would then link to:

http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware

Any help would be appreciated.

The direction that the Maemo Basics wiki page evolved isn't really in keeping with that. How about a new page linked at the bottom of the basics page called "Getting Started with Maemo" that covers actual how-tos? Does anything like this exist somewhere already?

There's a lot of out-of-date material on the wiki, so a concise and focused basic info and then getting started page would be helpful, as those are things that are both easy to update and the most relevant.

No, I'm not looking for a real "how to", I'm looking for a paragraph of general explanation.

If I were writing it, it would read:

"Maemo 5 and Maemo 4 Diablo handle upgrading automatically. Upgrading an older version of Maemo requires that you "flash" your tablet. Essentially you load the software onto your desktop computer and connect your Internet Tablet so the upgrade can be transferred to it. Full instructions are at:http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware "

Is that statement correct?
