News for Star Control fans: Ur-Quan Masters (the game formerly known as Star Control 2) can be played on the 770.

Don't get too excited though. There's no sound, some crucial controls are missing, movement in melee is jerky at times and I haven't packaged anything...

If anyone wants to reproduce this:
  • get sdl-image and sdl-image-dev as .debs from INdT . Install on scratchbox.
  • get Tremor sources from Xiph compile and install on scratchbox (install into /var/lib/install so the files are easier to find). (like I said sound doesn't really work, but you need something to get uqm to compile. I guess you could try removing the dependency).
  • get uqm-0.5.0 sources and the data package uqm-0.5.0-content from Sourceforge . Edit the file src/sc2code/libs/graphics/sdl/pure.c, and change "32" into "16" at line 89:
    Code:
    SDL_Video = SDL_SetVideoMode (ScreenWidthActual, ScreenHeightActual, 16, videomode_flags)
Compile uqm (select "debug" build, "optimized" will bail in mid-compile) and copy the data file into content/packages.
  • Test-drive uqm in scratchbox with run-standalone.sh ./uqm-debug --sound=none
  • install into scratchbox (into /var/lib/install so the files are easier to find).
Copy the installed files from scratchbox into the 770. Fix PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH, so your executable and libraries are found. run uqm --sound=none

I probably forgot something, let me know if you have problems.

Awesome... I've heard very positive things of UQM, it's some kind of rework/port of the original? I for one played that one through.. one of the very best games :-)

Could the jerkiness be because SDL is "too heavy" for 770? BTW make sure to link this thread to their forums at sf.

Great! I tried compiling this earlier, but missed the 32->16 bit... With scummvm, this is THE application for my 770, entertainment wise
Must... compile... now.

Edit: It works! Even the audio, though verrrry slow with it

Varis, uqm is faithfully ported from the original (opened) 3DO sources for Star Control 2. You can even choose which version you want to see, if there are differences in the 3DO and PC versions...

The occasional jerkiness is definitely because it's too 'heavy', but it remains to be seen how much is "acceptable overhead" and how much is just weird code (resulting from the original code being from another platform) -- I beleive there hasn't been much interest in optimizing since it works fine on even older PCs.

Would love to see this updated/ported to the N900. The faster cpu and dedicated graphics hardware should more correct the slowniss problems.

How cool would it be to have the complete star control II in your pocket... and .... even better.... To have multiplayer super melee! using bluetooth or wifi.... that would be so awesome.... I cannot describe it in words...

just...more dots ......
