I think the hardware is the same. It totally feels like a production unit, with the difference that there's no N900 printed on it, and the sticker in the battery compartment says "Property of Nokia. Not for sale."
I've been using it daily for three weeks, and it's a great phone.

And the best of all: the NDA time is over since yesterday!

I dont know if anyone knows this but.

For phones that do have a proper compass is the magnetometer a separate bit of hardware or is it built into the GPS chip?

For a bear of very little brain - what exactly does it mean that 'The NDA is over'? You can tell me things about it could couldn't before? Like what?

Whatever Nokia didn't want them to say , especially things like "X is broken" before it got fixed for production.

"non disclosure agreement"

It's something to ensure they can run their PR & marketing activities with no disruptions while they distribute preproduction units to key developers, reviewers and other pertinent partners..

If there should not be a compass in the N900: is it technically possible to build a digital compass in form of a micro sd-card and then insert it into the sd slot?

Possible? If the chips fit in that form factor. Likely? I think it would be quite difficult outside of a real company.

I have a list of components drawn up using bluetooth, but seriously Nokia missed the boat not having a magnetometer on board. I sure hope the n900's can run android because some of the "gee whiz" apps they seem to be looking for won't run on the n900. I'm questioning why I'm willing to bend over backwards to add it, especially if a 800x480+ android phone comes out.

I can honestly think of nothing worse than saddling the n900 with Android. Except maybe windows mobile.

The cancel order button is located at the bottom of most order pages.

Interesting thought, has anyone worked out what the GPS chipset is yet?

Also, someone should grep the latest kernel diff and see if there's mention of a compass. Set this topic to rest one way or the other.

If Android is basically a Java VM running on a Linux kernel, is it not plausible to emulate the Android API on the N900? Now THAT would really be amusing.

As I understand it the ARM chips usually have hardware assisted Java anyway, even if the OS does not support it (aka Windows Slowbile)
