Right now they ship Symbian and WinMo. So what are they moving to? Android. What are they dropping? Symbian. Here was a company that was already in bed with Nokia and Nokia couldn't convince them to support Maemo instead of Android.

Nothing new

With the establishment of Symbian Foundation, UIQ will cease to exist. S60 is the UI choice of Symbian Foundation; UIQ will contribute its assets to the foundation.[1] Patrick Olson of Sony Ericsson announced on October 21, 2008 at the Smartphone Show 2008 in London that UIQ didn't make it,[2] it didn't attract the operator, manufacturer or consumer interest needed to stop it failing.[3] At the start of January, 2009 the UIQ company filed for bankruptcy.[4] Source

Sony Ericsson might be a non-factor in the phone market. But if nobody else wants your open source OS, perhaps it is time to consider if it is in danger of becoming a non-factor.

Wikipedia lists 24 open source web browsers worthy of making it onto their comparison list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_browsers

Most people can name two of the 24. Linux users can name a few more. I doubt that there are many people who can name half of them off the top of their heads. Existence doesn't imply acceptance.

The problem Nokia will face at some point is that either they can offer a suite of phones running Maemo X or they can convince a number of companies to ditch their OS and their OS development costs in favor of running Maemo X (or both). Without that it's just an interesting experiment that Nokia won't be able to afford.

First off, Symbian is also a REAL OS, and the new UI will end all of that nonesensical talk. Besides the UI, Symbian is the bomb, and once Qt is fully implemented as the app toolkit, the apps will be similar to Maemo's, and more versatile, supporting more hardware. It will outsell Maemo at every turn, probably even at the high end.

[QUOTE=DaveP1;348893]Forget the markets, forget the reviewers, here is why Nokia is losing. QUOTE]

That's the main part of the problem. Nokia is WINNING, not losing. Selling 40% of all smartphones in the world, and more than the next 2 or 3 combined, is a WIN, not a loss. Having Symbian on HALF of all smartphones sold is a win for Nokia. Statements like DaveP1's are only conjecture, and not very accurate.

And as for winning, the "game" isn't decided in one inning. Apple and Android are making waves, but not swallowing up much marketshare, relatively. They have the RIM and WinMo OSes to catch first, and Samsung and Blackberry as manufacturers.

Apple has its media sales service, but not much else. Samsung has very little in way of services. RIM's services are mostly its email and enterprise support, not much else. What will these two hang their hats on when device sales continue to fall, Apps stop selling so well, other music services become more attractive, or APRU fails to grow? Each of these factors is considered LIKELY to occur in the next 8 quarters. Its not all about device sales. How sound is the business planning, and what is the direction?

Linux is the big thing in China, and gaining in the US as well. Maemo will be a hit in the Asian markets once it spreads outside the extreme high end and diversifies its form factor portfolio. The buzz word of the industry today is becoming open source, and Nokia's the only one playing for real. They're innovating, something the others have ceased to do for quite some time.

I agree completely with your statements. However, while I see it as a big plus for Nokia, I worry that it's a big minus for Maemo. I don't know what Nokia's internal decision making process is but from the outside I could make a rational business case for the smartphone business to focus on Symbian 80 (or whatever they call the next iteration) and the high end to go with Win7 as they have on their tablet.

I want to see smarter pocketable devices running Maemo but I fear I won't if it doesn't gain more traction in the market.

Maemo 5 and 6 will only be in premium devices, mostly because of its inherant hardware requirements. Symbian^4 will be more secure, able to span more versatile screen resolutions and hardware, and easily outsell Maemo because of its lower costs per device. It will become the mass market Volkswagen, while Maemo will be Audi. Smaller scale, but higher end, premium features and hardware. Maemo's developer audience will exploit Qt to feed apps from Maemo to Symbian, possibly for sale in the Ovi Store.
